Anderson and King are originally from Minnesota. King is also part of the Minnesota-based groups Halloween, Alaska, Happy Apple, and Love-Cars. Founding member and pianist Ethan Iverson left the group at the beginning of 2018 and was replaced by Orrin Evans. Evans left the group in 2021.
The three original members first played together in 1989, but didn't come together as an established act until 2000. Perhaps to make up for lost time, they proceeded to record their first album, a self-titled effort released on Fresh Sound, after playing only three gigs together. In 2002, after playing a show at the Village Vanguard which was heard by Columbia Records representative Yves Beauvais, the band was signed to Columbia. They released their major label debut, These Are the Vistas, in 2003, and followed it up with Give in 2004 and Suspicious Activity? in 2005. Also in 2005, a live disc - Blunt Object: Live in Tokyo - was released. The band went into the studio again in September 2006 to record Prog, released in May 2007.
The trio's music combines elements of traditional and free jazz with rock and pop influences; These Are the Vistas included a version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and "Flim" by Aphex Twin. Give contains covers of tunes by the Pixies and Black Sabbath, while Suspicious Activity contains a cover of the theme from Chariots of Fire. Prog contains a cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer".

The Bad Plus are so tremendously good, I love them man. This is probably my favorite off "These are the Vistas", but Flim, Heart of Glass, and ESPECIALLY Silence Is the Question is up there too

There was no 1972 Bronze Medalist in weightlifting called Jacque !!
The song is amazing nevertheless.

I don't know what to make of the take home message. I mean, it feels like Jacque gave up, but a competitor should be proud of her or his time regardless of goldmedalship. I'd like to hear more stories behind their other songs about olympians. In any case, thanks for the upload. It's amazing.

I think is a model of living a good life. He strove for greatness, then moved on when it was time and lived his life. Anyway, a very uplifting tune.

Revered as a “hero,” he strode the beaches content—a medal-adorned Olympian. When we rank and compare things as we do, it’s very easy to lose sight of what matters or of the fact that in this case he won. He may not have won gold or even silver. But bronze is a beautiful metal. Hell, there’s an entire age named for it and its life-changing properties for our species. He set foot in the arena (more than most of us can say), tested his medal in the crooked old world and walked out with a metal!
The takeaway here for me is one of humility, gratitude, and contentment.

Strive for greatness. Desire the best of your abilities like olympians do, but if things happen in life be content with what you have and did

I heard this used on NPR as an outro, and used Shazam to identify it.
