Hazy Shade of Winter
The Bangles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time, time, time
See what's become of me

Time, time, time
See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hear the Salvation Army Band
Down by the riverside
It's bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned
Carry a cup in your hand
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hang onto your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around
Grass is high
Fields are ripe
It's the springtime of my life

Seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me?

Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Look around
Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground
Look around
Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground
Look around

Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground

Overall Meaning

The Bangles's "Hazy Shade of Winter" is a melancholic but empowering song about the fleeting nature of time and the importance of perseverance in the face of change. In the song, the singer reflects on their life, observing how time has passed them by and how they have struggled to find their path. The opening lines, "Time, time, time / See what's become of me," set the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting the singer's regret over missed opportunities and their desire to find something meaningful.

As the song progresses, the singer urges listeners to take stock of their own lives and to hold onto their hopes even in the face of disappointment. The lyrics, "Hang onto your hopes my friend / That's an easy thing to say / But if your hopes should pass away / Simply pretend / That you can build them again," are a reminder that while life may be difficult, there is always the potential for growth and renewal. The song's repeated refrain, "Look around / Leaves are brown / And the sky / Is a Hazy Shade of Winter," further emphasizes the idea of change and the cyclical nature of seasons and life.

Overall, "Hazy Shade of Winter" is a poignant meditation on the fleeting nature of time and the importance of perseverance and hope in the face of life's challenges. It encourages listeners to take stock of their lives and to hold onto their dreams, even when things seem bleak.

One of the greatest cover versions of any song ever. Never would have thought The Bangles could have done a late-80s Hard Rock/New Wave cover of a little-known Simon & Garfunkel song, but they did and it was brilliant.

@Waynemanner

You hit the nail on the head

@bruceradzwion6160

@jasonmcilvain5789

Well the one thing these girls always had going was harmonies and that helps on ant Simon and Garfunkel tune

@bland9876

Strange when the cover is the version they play on the radio. So I thought this was the original didn't even know the other existed.

@AckzaTV

Oh I had no idea. It's like covers are where the real art expression appears

this is definitely one of those times when a cover truly surpasses the original.
Edit: mainly because of the riff, what she does to it is magic.

@AlphaDogTech

Blinded by the Light was also a great cover...

@richsangillo3875

Possibly their best song ever. If I had to pick one that i couldn't live without it would be this one. It ranks very high on their list too. All four of them signing together makes it so unique. The blending of their voices together was always what made them so special.

@monetarnie3841

Their best cover. It is Simon and Garfunkel`s song.
