Torn
The Baseballs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought, I saw her brought to life
She was warm, she came around and she was dignified
She showed me what it was to cry

Well, I couldn't be that man she adored
don't seem to know
don't seem to care
what your heart is for
But I don't know her anymore

There's nothing where she used to lie
The inspiration has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake so I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late, I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
Should have seen just what was there
And not some holy light

It crawled beneath my veins
And now I don't care, I had no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things
That I can touch, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake so I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late, I'm already torn

torn
so torn

There's nothing where she used to lie
My conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's right, I'm torn

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on this floor

Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake so I can see
The perfect sky is torn

You're a little late

This is how I feel
so torn

Overall Meaning

Interpreting The Baseballs' "Torn" is a complex task because the song was a hit for both Natalie Imbruglia in 1997 and Ednaswap in 1995. The Baseballs' version was a cover of Imbruglia's version. The opening line, "I thought I saw her brought to life" can be interpreted as the singer seeing his love interest for the first time and being so taken aback by her beauty that he saw her like a mirage. The second line, "She was warm, she came around and she was dignified," reinforces this idea that he saw her as someone who was perfect and untouchable. The third line, "She showed me what it was to cry," suggests that the singer learned a lot about himself and his emotions through his interactions with this woman.

The song's chorus is where the singer reveals his inner turmoil. "I'm all out of faith/This is how I feel/I'm cold and I am shamed/Lying naked on the floor" paints a harrowing picture of someone who has been emotionally defeated. He has no more hope, is ashamed of the way he is feeling, and is vulnerable in his raw emotion. The line "Illusion never changed/Into something real/I'm wide awake so I can see/The perfect sky is torn" suggests that the singer was in love with the idea of who he thought this woman was, but in reality, she was not who he thought she was. He is now awake to this reality and can see that the perfect world he pictured has been shattered.

The final lines, "You're a little late, I'm already torn/So I guess the fortune teller's right/Should have seen just what was there/And not some holy light," suggests that the singer is moving on from his heartbreak. He understands that he should have seen the truth that was right in front of him, and not some idealized version of the woman. The fact that he refers to a fortune teller suggests that he is looking for guidance and direction in his life, but he is also acknowledging that it may be too late to fix the relationship.

I was at this concert, just melting like everybody there.  This year I was at another concert and they did it again - turned me into a groupie fool. My husband let me drool.  He loves their rocking music and we both love seeing them together.
