Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Be True to Your School
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And says his school is great
I tell him right away
Now what's the matter buddy
Ain't you heard of my school
It's number one in the state (Hey, hey! Take it away! Get that ball and fight!)
So be true to your school now
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
I got a letterman's sweater
With a letter in front
I got for footbal and track
I'm proud to where it now
When I cruise around
The other parts of the town
I got a decal in back
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school (Do it again, do again, we like it, we like it)
(Rah rah rah) Come Friday we'll be jacked up on the football game
And I'll be ready to fight
We're gonna smash 'em now
My girl will be working on her pom-poms now
And she'll be yelling tonight
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school (Push them back, push them back)
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
The Beach Boys' song "Be True to Your School" is an ode to school pride and loyalty. The song encourages listeners to show allegiance to their schools, just as they would to their romantic partners. The lyrics paint a picture of a high school football game, with the singer boasting about his school's accomplishments to an antagonist who puts down his school. The song shows the singer's pride in his school and his determination to defend it against any detractors.
The lyrics, while simple, convey a significant message about the importance of school spirit and loyalty. The chorus, which repeats throughout the song, emphasizes the idea of "being true" to one's school and letting one's "colors fly." The use of the word "colors" here is significant because it symbolizes school pride; in American high schools, each school typically has its own set of colors that are associated with the school's mascot and identity.
Overall, "Be True to Your School" is a feel-good, upbeat song that celebrates school spirit and loyalty. It is a testament to the enduring power of school pride and the importance of supporting one's community.

When big Larry came 'round just to put him down
Spongebob turned into a clown
And no girl ever wants to dance
With a fool who went and ripped his pants
I know I shouldn't mope around, I shouldn't curse
But the pain feels so much worse
'Cause windin' up with no one is a lot less fun
Than a burn from the sun or sand in your buns!
Now I learned a lesson I won't soon forget
So listen, and you won't regret
Be true to yourself, don't miss your chance
And you won't end up like the fool
Who ripped his pants
cajun steelers
When some loud braggart tries to put me down
And says his school is great
I tell him right away
