Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair
I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations
Good good good good vibrations
(Oom bop bop)
(Oom bop bop excitations)
Good good good good vibrations
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda yeah
Get her out of my heart
We always take my car cause it's never been beat
And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet
None of the guys go steady cause it wouldn't be right
To leave their best girl home now on Saturday night
I get around
Get around round round I get around
From town to town
Get around round round I get around
I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
I'm makin' real good bread
Get around round round I get around
I get around
Round
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
Round round get around
I get around
Yeah get around
Ahh ooo ooo
It happened on the strip where the road is wide
(Oooo rev it up now)
Two cool shorts standin' side by side
(Oooo rev it up now)
Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a four-thirteen
(Oooo rev it up now)
Revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean
(Oooo rev it up now)
Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
Come on (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari)with me
Come along (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari)with me
Let's go surfin' now
Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
Bar bar bar bar Barbar Ann
Bar bar bar bar Barbar Ann
Oh Barbara Ann take my hand
(Bar bar bar bar Barbar Ann)
Barbara Ann
(Bar bar bar bar Barbar Ann)
You got me rockin' and a rollin'
Rockin' and a reelin' Barbara Ann
Bar bar bar bar Barbar Ann
Let's go now
If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californi-a
You'd seem 'em wearing their baggies
Huarachi sandals too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin' U.S.A.
Well she got her daddy's car
And she cruised through the hamburger stand now
Seems she forgot all about the library
Like she told her old man now
And with the radio blasting
Goes cruising just as fast as she can now
And she'll have fun fun fun
'Til her daddy took the T-Bird away
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
Ooo-wee ooo-weeoo
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
Ooo-wee ooo-weeoo
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-Bird away)
The Beach Boys Medley is a unique composition of different Beach Boys songs woven together in a vocal harmony. The lyrics open with the classic Good Vibrations, describing the singer's admiration and infatuation with a girl and the happy vibes around her. The song then shifts to Help Me Rhonda, a plea by the singer to his friend Rhonda to help him mend his broken heart. The song then moves onto the song I Get Around, describing the singer's love for cruising around with his buddies and the girls they meet. The medley then shifts to a "revved up" song about two cool guys with cool cars revving their engines, followed by the classic song Surfin' USA, describing the surfing culture in California. The song then closes with the song Fun, Fun, Fun, describing a girl cruising in her dad's car, having fun until her dad takes away her car privileges.

The Beach Boys are still the Best. Beatles, Supremes. Olivia, Karen & Richard, Elton - what can I say. Radio wouldn't have repeats with the 60s to now. Saturday Night Dance Party back on one station per Market. Just a suggestion.

A great medley by The Beach Boys! This was a featured track on "American Top 40 - The '80s" (from October 17th, 1981), & was the #34 song. Bravo, Brian, Dennis (R.I.P.), Carl (R.I.P.), Mike & Al!

And the thing is, they could have made another medley with just as many, but different, songs. Maybe two more medleys! Think about all the greats that didn't make it into this medley: California Girls, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, Wouldn't It Be Nice, 409, Little Honda, Kokomo, When I Grow Up, Don't Worry Baby, It's Ok, Do It Again, etc.

I remember how this medley went up against (while, not exactly at the same time) Hooked on Classics and Stars on 45, which were dance singles. I found this mix more ingenious because the tempo actually changes a few times.

Great medley!
