Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Devoted To My Baby
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
They think I'm bad and I treat her so mean
But all they know is from what they've seen
And when I get her alone now
And when I give her my love it's between her and me
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
And I know she's happy with me
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
Some guys may think they'd be better for her
But she knows just what she wants for sure
And when we're out with our friends now
You know that we never have to put on a show
And we stay together while other couples come and go
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
And I know she's happy with me
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
(good to my baby)
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
She's my girl and I'm good to my baby
The Beach Boys' song "Good to My Baby" is a declaration of love and fidelity to a girl and a rebuttal of criticism from others who perceive him as being bad and mean to her. The song begins with the singer acknowledging the negative perception that others have of him and his treatment of his girlfriend, but he asserts that they do not know the full story and cannot understand the depth of their love. Despite what others say, the singer claims that he is "good to [his] baby" and revels in the happiness that they share when they are alone together.
The song's chorus reinforces the singer's commitment to being a good partner and lover to his girlfriend. He repeats the phrase "She's my girl and I'm good to my baby" multiple times, emphasizing that their relationship is strong and that his love for her is unwavering. The verse that follows returns to the theme of others' perceptions, with the singer noting that some people may believe that they could treat his girlfriend better than he does, but his girlfriend knows what she wants and is happy with him. The song concludes with a reiteration of the chorus, highlighting the singer's dedication to his girlfriend and their relationship.
Overall, "Good to My Baby" is a simple but heartfelt song about love and loyalty. The singer's tone is defiant in the face of criticism and confident in the strength of his relationship. The song's repetitive chorus and simple melody lend themselves to a feel-good, sing-along vibe that reinforces the singer's message of love and fidelity.

Lyrics:
Well it's been building up inside of me
For oh I don't know how long
I don't know why
But I keep thinking
Something's bound to go wrong
But she looks in my eyes
And makes me realize
And she says "don't worry, baby"
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Everything will turn out alright
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
I guess I should've kept my mouth shut
When I started to brag about my car
But I can't back down now because
I pushed the other guys too far
She makes me come alive
And makes me wanna drive
When she says "don't worry, baby"
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Everything will turn out alright
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
She told me "Baby, when you race today
Just take along my love with you
And if you knew how much I loved you
Baby, nothing could go wrong with you"
Oh what she does to me
When she makes love to me
And she says "don't worry, baby"
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Everything will turn out alright
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby
Don't worry, baby

I’m 74 going on 30 when it comes to listening to Beach Boy songs. This song still has the same impact on me as it did in my surfing days on Long Island in 1965,brings back many sweet memories of my teenage years. I’m lucky I still feel very young at heart. This music is eternal.

I’m 19 years old and I heard this song for the first time while I was driving with my grandparents in Dana Point, CA. My grandpa had said the Beach Boys were one of his favorites when he was my age, so I looked them up and this is the first one I chose. My God this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, not to mention the happiness that my grandparents got from hearing this song again in so long. Music is so powerful and driving with them up the coast in my favorite town was so poignant and beautiful. Thank you Beach Boys for this incredible shared memory :)

How many times I've heard, ' Brian Wilson is/was a genius.'
The Beach Boy sound was easy-going but there really was genius behind it.
