Rooted in doo-wop and rock and roll, their early string of vocal surf hits defined the '60s California Sound. For a period afterward, they notably delved into progressive pop styles. often combining elements from classical and jazz in innovative ways.
Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

I might not capture the magic of the American music of that time.
I can appreciate a lot the genius of Brian Wilson - BUT
The Beatles where four of them, and I cannot be but DEEPLY touched
by their predecessor album by the name of RUBBER SOUL.
Currently I'm listening to both of the albums song per song
and I have to admit: There's also some deepness within the Beach Boys.

Idk,I think making them short and to the point is a strength because it makes them accessible for pop listeners but they also don't wear out their welcome with it. I'd love 10 minute versions too but I find overall it's much more rewarding to be able to play the song multiple times. I think when songs end up being like 6-10 minutes they end up dragging on a lot, a lot of times they end up just repeating things that have been said/done already and those things lose their impact the second/third/fourth/etc time around.
Look at a band like Metallica and their albums master of puppets and And Justice for All - lots of those songs are great but end up getting kinda meh halfway through because they end up repeating the same chorus like 8 times per song - and sometimes their songs, like Disposable Heroes, the choruses have two parts, so you hear both parts four times each several times and even though it's a good refrain you end up just completely bored by the 6 minute mark because the choruses have completely lost their impact.
I like a solid long song too, but I don't like long songs that are only long for the sake of a lengthy song. I think a song should only be the length it was made to be, if a person needs only 3 minutes to say what they want to I think it's best they keep it at 3 minutes. Some things definitely need a lot more time, and I love it when it is necessary but idk.
I got into progressive rock when I was in high school and I loved the idea of long songs but as time has gone on I have come to think it can be pretentious as hell if the artist is just doing it to do it and doesn't come off like they believe the song had to be that long. Or long rock operas that get played off as though they are better than other albums just because they tell a story and have long songs - I honestly haven't heard many rock operas that I felt really stood out and were worthy of the high praise the fans gave it, I used to think songs/albums were better just for being longer and having traits of the rock opera and I really think some people can get pretentious as hell about it.
At this point, unless it's one of the best things I've ever heard I just can't stand it. I think songs should only be as long as they have to be, for some songs that length is 2 minutes, for others it's 10 (especially a lot of jazz tracks), but I just am not a fan of pop music being longer overall because I think short songs have the advantage of remaining fresh for their whole duration and they tend to make you want to hear it again - the fact that you wish there was a 10 minute version of any song on this album is proof of a short songs effectiveness. You are left wanting more because it's short and to the point, it doesn't have the chance to wear out it's welcome.
I find when songs end up being 10 minutes but they have a lot of sections that get repeated I end up only getting 3 or 4 minutes in before I either skip the song or start it over. Whenever I discover a video uploaded of a song that is extended - like a 30 minutes version of a song where it has been edited so that it gets repeated several times, I get bored of it pretty fast. It's just not the same.
Edit: the best examples of long songs that I appreciate for their length that are still pop-oriented are Black Sabbath's later Ozzy ears albums like Sabotage and Never Say Die - most of the songs are actually 2 songs put together, splitting at around the halfway mark but each song it's own unique journey, whether it be the song Symptom of the Universe beginning as essentially a thrash metal song and ending up with a really swinging/soulful acoustic section at the end that almost sounds reminiscent of some Sublime songs like What I Got, they are the perfect examples of long songs that definitely deserved to be long but are still accessible despite the experimental nature.

4 or 5 great songs and the rest are OK. The other songs are not revolutionary and my grandmother would love them. The great songs are God Only Knows, Caroline No, Wouldn't It be Nice. Sloop is good. The rest are OK at best. Nobody will admit that the rest of the record would not hold on its own.
