"Pet Sounds" is an instrumental composed and produced by Brian Wilson and is the twelfth track on the 1966 album Pet Sounds by the American pop band The Beach Boys. It was performed by Brian and several session musicians, with no other members of the Beach Boys.

Originally called "Run James Run", Brian intended it to be used as the theme of a James Bond movie.

Pet Sounds was recorded on November 17, 1965 at Western Studios, with Chuck Britz engineering

It's a very Brian Wilson inflection to serve up not only a section in a song that you wouldn't expect or 'seemingly' doesn't belong, but here even a track that doesn't really belong to the rest of the album. At that point in time The Beach Boys were introducing albums that were now a concept within themselves as a sort of ''Pocket Symphony'' or mini symphony after The Beatles began doing this first did with ''Rubber Soul''.

I believe these amazing new development also inspired the whole 70s progressive rock with groups like Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull, Genesis, UK UK and Pink Floyd ect as new groups assumed they had to become more sophisticated in arrangements and compositions to attain a Beatles, Beach Boys level of status and fame. This was misguided because none of the 70s groups really got close to The Beach Boys or The Beatles level of brilliance in composition as songwriting no matter how complicated they tried to make their music sound.

The Beach Boys were just so magical in so many ways I could talk about all this for a month nonstop. Brian's music has that imaginary childlike innocence that can lay on you very simple song structure ideas to give a much more superior depth and feel to his songs. He never needed to give you bewildering complexity all though when he does stunning arrangement it is always there to serve a purpose and never to show off or be flashy.
I played Sloop John B to my mom in the car just a few weeks ago after asking her do you remember hearing this...as soon as that initial pitch sounds out she knew the song immediately.

@exxumma I think the upbeat tune is supposed to contrast with the theme of the album which might be moving past a time in your life that you may have idealized or romanticized. Because of this I think that its structured well, though I understand why you might feel that way.

It really was for me. I loved it the minute I first played it in 1987. I only came to it after watching a TV programme celebrating 20 years of Sgt Pepper and Paul saying that he was inspired by Pet Sounds. It is a master piece

I've studied music threory and composition long after my time at the Con (I've studied for decades) and if you think I'm into the 'hype' of the Beatles then there's no use discussing with you. @Adam F Of these, I'd only listen to The Long and Winding Road, Eleanor Rigby and Blackbird. I'll flip the station on all the rest. And yes, Here There and Everywhere is granny music and Let It Be is some kind of gospel song. I like a lot of Paul's songs, but I could do without many of his Beatle songs and practically his entire solo catalogue. I can listen to the greatest hits of his solo stuff, but nothing else.

@Adam F There are several songs on this album that are better then 90% Beatle's songs and I'm a big Beatle fan. The thing is, the hype for the Beatles has overblown everything they've done. They are not far and away better than every other band. I'm not arguing they're aren't one of the great bands. Now McCartney is credited with all these great melodic ballads. I would much rather listen to most of Brian Wilson's melodies and ballads. I don't get off listening to Here, There and Everywhere, For No One, I Will, etc. I can hear the melodies, just don't care for them that much. And Wilson's voice sounds much better to me. Too many get wrapped up in the hype.

@undefined Lust Maybe from 1962-1968 - From 20/20 to Holland they become more group efforts with Brian contributing less and less (particularly after Sunflower), 15 Big Ones and Love You are Brian Albums as well as the unreleased Adult/Child. From there on in they are group efforts (though MIU has a ton of Brian penned songs as does Keeping the Summer Alive) all the way through to That's Why God Made The Radio which arguably a Joe Thomas / Brian Wilson album.

It's never too late to discover Pet Sounds. Forget anything you think you know about The Beach Boys - because this is a stand-alone masterpiece that stacks up to the best of the best musical works of the 20th Century. A bold statement, but I believe well-deserved. I didn't listen to this album in it's entirety until 2001, and it changed how I listen to music. Brian Wilson is the Beethoven of 20th Century Pop Music, and I think that's a fair comparison, in more ways than one.

But the music is just not on the same level and hasn't influenced music like The Beatles did. Their influence is recognised for a reason. The fact that Brian Wilson hasn't been recognised as such just proves it. No matter how much you wish it was. Watch Howard Goodall's appreciation documentary on here. He knows his stuff.

Yes, that's true but Brian was the maestro. Brian was pushing his vision out of those musicians and where and what they needed to play to manifest what he heard in his head. A little different from the wrecking crew playing for the Monkees and Fifth Dimension. But you are so correct on the professionalism of the wrecking crew.

Let me start off by saying i was so lucky as a little kid to get to go to the Beach Boys house. My brother knew Carl somehow. So long ago. 1961 i think. My two brothers and my dad lived in Redondo Beach and The Beach Boys lived one city away in Hawthorne. CA. On to the album, i know some people who don't care for this album and it drives me nuts. I bought this in1966 and loved it then and love it now. This is a damn good album. And that's that.

I love the comments here! each of you has a bit of magic tucked away there. My love story with the band really started when I was 12 in 1965-66, at school in England and with the US musical "invasion" of the UK...we sang Sloop John B in music class, but not "that horrible pop version" according to the teacher, but the traditional one ... that was agony! Good Vibrations came out just before we left what was "home" to my sister and me and my parents returned to Pakistan as highly qualified doctors to serve the country they had helped make 20 years earlier at Partition. Very strange and often difficult times for my sister and me, also for my mother, and that song remained a kind of beacon throughout the years. A lifetime later, it still is perhaps my favourite song of all time......

I was born in 1966. The first music I literally ever heard was this album, which my dad played very, very often. He once told me as I was flipping through his collection when I was about six or seven years old, that Pet Sounds was the greatest album ever made. Here we are, 54 years later, and it still is. Dad, RIP. Ironically, Brian and my dad look just alike. When Brian's gone it will feel like I lost my father all over again. Yet, look at the legacies they both left.........

It was my dad's favorite, too. He bought it in 1966 and played it when I was born the same year. To this day, I consider it my favorite. Interestingly, my dad and Brian look(ed) just alike. My dad died in 1996. When Brian goes, I will lose my other father. Just thinking about it, now that time marches on and we've lost so many, makes me cry.

Even putting aside The Beatles and other bands from the 60's, you can still hear this album's influence over 30, even 40 years later in bands such as Weezer. Rivers Cuomo clearly drew a lot of influence from this album.

I was cleaning my attic this weekend. I came across several Beach Boys albums, so I decided to play Petsound on my 1965 Zenith Full Circle of Sound attached with 5 Bose premium speakers. The record sounded excellent. My best friend John Atwood hear the music and was surprised by my taste in music.

Wouldn't it Be Nice is such a thing of beauty--every mili-second of it from beginning to end. Its so full of the innocence and hope (and love) of the 1960s. But its only the beginning of this miraculous record! It literally belongs in the history books of the twentieth century, but its also just such so much fun to listen to!

@Folk Alchemy I'd even say Revolver was a continuation of this album before Sgt. Pepper's. Geoff Emerick came in to be the engineer with the Beatles on Revolver, and gave them some of the unbelievable sounds you hear on that album.

"better in mono" = my ass.....maybe with PEPPER , but not with this. you just have to hear distinct sounds in a L-R mix to fully bask in it's glory.

@clemsonbloke The original Beach Boys albums in the 60's were released in either mono only or mono and an electronic reprocessing technique Capital Records referred to as "Douphonic", analogous to the "fake stereo" albums, many from English artists, which puts all the low tones one channel and the high ones on the other. Also (many people do not know this) that Brian is deaf in one ear, and therefore cannot properly hear a stereo mix.

@Thomas Aquinas - According to an interview with Al, the big reason that Beach Boys albums were habitually mixed in mono is that stereo music played over speakers in a store could produce some rather disastrous results. You could be in one section of a store and hear nothing but the drums, then go over to another section and hear nothing but vocals.

I would have to go back and check interviews, but I seem to remember that Brian claimed his partial deafness had nothing to do with mixing in mono because he heard stereo as mono anyway.

But if that's true, this and Good Vibrations are the only two things this late that were in mono. Nonetheless - i agree with Victor - this version is a REVELATION in THREE DIMENSIONS. It's a different and i think better album in this stereo mix. God bless Brian Wilson.

Took me years of periodically revisiting this album to fully appreciate it... it may only have two big hits on it but every other song is fantastic in its own way. Very few people are on the same level as Brian Wilson melodically-- Paul McCartney, Elton John, and maybe a few others... but it's a short list.

This was the first album I listened to on acid and I felt like I was on cloud nine. I felt loved and saw things beyond my comprehension. It was magical. It's funny how life works, I used to dislike the Beach Boys, I always thought they were like a poor man's Beatles but I was so wrong.
