Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Their Hearts Were Full of Song
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the girl who wore his ring
Through the wintery snow
The world they knew was one
For their hearts were full of spring
As the days grew old
And the nights passed into time
Gentle boy, tender girl
Their love remained still young
For their hearts were full of spring
Then one day they died
And their graves were side by side
On a hill where robins sing
And they say violets
Grow there the whole year round
For their hearts were full of spring
The lyrics to The Beach Boys' song “Their Hearts Were Full of Song” tell a story of a gentle boy and a girl in love. It's a story about two people whose love was pure and unadulterated by the world's chaos. They embraced life with wide eyes and open hearts, content in their own bubble of love. Through the harsh and bitter winter, not even the snow could dampen their spirits. They were intertwined in every way possible, and for them the world they knew was one of love and happiness, with hearts full of spring.
As time passed, the couple grew old together, but their love didn't fade. They stayed young and in love, and their hearts remained full of spring. One day, they eventually passed away, and their graves were laid side by side on a hill. They left behind them a thriving environment, where robins sing and violets grow throughout the year, a testament to the love they shared.
The song is a reminder of the power of love, and how it can bring eternal sunshine and happiness in a world full of winter and darkness. It tells us that when we find love, it's a truly beautiful thing, and we should cherish every moment of it.

There's a story told of a very gentle boy
A tale exists about a boy known for his kindness
And the girl who wore his ring
And the girl who was promised to him through their engagement
Through the wintery snow
Despite the harshness of winter
The world they knew was one
Their world was perfect together
For their hearts were full of spring
Because their spirits never aged
As the days grew old
With time
And the nights passed into time
And the evenings turned to memories
And the weeks and years took wind
As time continued to move forward
Gentle boy, tender girl
The boy and girl who loved sweetly
Their love remained still young
Their affection never aged
For their hearts were full of spring
Because their youthfulness never faded
Then one day they died
But one day they passed away
And their graves were side by side
And they were buried beside each other
On a hill where robins sing
On a peaceful location where birds continue to chirp
And they say violets
It's been said that violet flowers
Grow there the whole year round
Always appear and bloom there
For their hearts were full of spring
Because the couple's love never died and remains eternal
