Sloop John B
The Beach Boys [Pet Sounds] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sheriff John Stone
Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up, I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
(Hoist up the John B's sail)
Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I want to go home
Let me go home
The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
The Beach Boys' "Sloop John B" is a cover of a traditional Bahamian folk song known as "The John B. Sails." The lyrics depict the singer's desire to go home after experiencing a disastrous trip on a boat named the John B. The singer, accompanied by their grandfather, had been drinking heavily in Nassau when they got into a fight, leaving the singer feeling "broke up" and wanting to go home. The first mate got drunk and broke into the captain's trunk, leading to the intervention of the constable and Sheriff John Stone. Meanwhile, the poor cook had taken ill, throwing away the singer's food and adding to their frustration. The song is a simple, catchy tune that captures the homesickness and longing for familiarity that can come with travel.
The version of "Sloop John B" included on The Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds was a significant departure from their previous music. The use of unorthodox instrumentation, such as the harpsichord, and lush string arrangements were innovative, and the reflective, introspective lyrics marked a shift in the band's style. Fun Fact: The band initially struggled with recording "Sloop John B." Band member Al Jardine was initially resistant to the idea of a cover song but eventually warmed to the idea. Brian Wilson and his father successfully convinced the other band members to attempt the song during studio sessions.

Without Pet Sounds, then no Sgt Pepper. And without Rubber Soul, no Pet Sounds. I love both the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and love how both created great music

Even though recording began before Sgt Pepper came out, I still wonder if Days of Future Passed would have been the same album without Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds.
