Gratitude
The Beastie Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good times gone, and you missed them
What's gone wrong in your system?
Things they bounce like a Spaulding
What'd you think, did you miss your calling?
It's so free, this kind of feeling
It's like life, it's so appealing
When you've got so much to say it's called gratitude
And that's right

Good times gone but you feed it
Hate's grown strong, you feel you need it
Just one thing, do you know you?
What you think, that the world owes you?
What's gonna set you free?
Look inside and you'll see

When you've got so much to say it's called gratitude
And that's right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Beastie Boys' song "Gratitude" speak to the concept of appreciation and thankfulness for the good times in life. The opening lines, "Good times gone, and you missed them. What's gone wrong in your system?" suggest that the person addressed has lost touch with the positive experiences in their life and is focusing on negative emotions, such as hate. The subsequent line, "Things they bounce like a Spaulding," adds a playful and nostalgic tone to the song.

The lyrics then turn to offer a solution to the person's problems: a sense of gratitude. The lyric, "It's so free, this kind of feeling. It's like life, it's so appealing," emphasizes that recognizing the good things in life is an easy and positive way to view the world. The refrain, "When you've got so much to say it's called gratitude. And that's right," hammers home the message that gratitude is a powerful mindset that can combat negativity and promote positivity.

Overall, "Gratitude" is a song that encourages listeners to appreciate the good things in life, recognize when negative emotions are taking over their mindset, and turn to gratitude as a way to create positivity in their lives.

The angriest song about being thankful ever written. Absolute masterpiece on every level.

They sound angry but like not overly messy? ... I don't know the lyrics yet.. anyone can be loud or outgoing..rap.. have a certain delivery.. but the sound..like and lyrics...story..the whole SOUND... from some rappers is inappropriate or ugly..too intense..annoying. whatever one wants to word it. It's natural or proper..to write from one's own life but..who enjoys hearing about abuse or certain struggle..deep or personal private stuff... of any race. I dont...want to hear "open" put into a rap.. like ... it's overly ghetto or emotional... from monetary ease or not.. it's important to know people don't like yo hear that..personal intense...life stories put on a record... lol ... I thought it to be super f*cking annoying at some point . People want to feel good..relax..be entertained.. they ..we don't want to hear struggle..or people's business... music isn't supposed to be how it is. Ask around..like..the whole world... English west is too open.. everyone has abuse in their life or a past or problems to some extent.. no rapping about it.. whatever
