The Beatles' song "Anna" is a heart-wrenching ballad about a man letting go of the woman he loves because she has chosen someone else. Instead, it was a placeholder for the name "Annette" as the band had been asked to write a song for the movie "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini," which had a character named Annette. However, Paul McCartney changed the name to Anna to make it more rhythmical.
"Anna" was one of the Beatles' favorite songs to perform in their early years, and John Lennon was particularly fond of it. The song was initially recorded in March of 1963 in a single take but was rerecorded later in the year with better sound quality. This song did not achieve chart success upon its initial release and was not released as an official single until 1964 in the United States, where it peaked at #60. Overall, Anna remains a fan favorite and a testament to the Beatles' early talent in writing and performing ballads.
