Matchbox
The Beatles䈀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said I'm sitting here watching
Matchbox hole in my clothes
I said I'm sitting here wondering
Matchbox hole in my clothes
I ain't got no matches
But I sure got a long way to go

I'm an old poor boy
I'm a long way from home
I'm an old poor boy
And I'm a long way from home
I've never been happy
'Cause everything I ever did was wrong

Well, if you don't want my peaches
Honey please don't shake my tree
If you don't want any of those peaches
Honey, please don't mess around my tree
I've got news for you baby
Leave me here in misery, all right!

Well let me be your little dog
Till your big dog comes
Let me be your little dog
Till your big dog comes
And when your big dog gets here
Watch how your puppy dog runs

Well I said I'm sitting here watching
Matchbox hole in my clothes
I said I'm sitting here wondering
Matchbox hole in my clothes

I ain't got no matches
But I sure got a long way to go

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' "Matchbox" is a bluesy song that tells the story of a poor boy who has a long way to go. He is sitting and watching a matchbox with a hole in his clothes, wondering about his life. He is never happy because everything he ever did was wrong. He is longing for someone to accept him and maybe even take care of him. He pleads with his lover not to mess with him if she doesn't want anything from him. He then asks to be someone's little dog until their big dog comes, promising to be faithful and obedient. The song ends with him acknowledging that he has a long way to go.

The song was originally written and recorded by blues singer-songwriter Carl Perkins in 1957. The Beatles covered the song in 1964, with Ringo Starr on lead vocals. The song was included on their album "Long Tall Sally" and was a hit in the UK and the US. This song features Ringo as the lead vocalist, one of the few songs in which he has a lead vocal. John Lennon and George Harrison played the rhythm guitars, while Paul McCartney played the bass. This is one of the two tracks that featured Ringo on lead vocals, the other being "Boys."

She says it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat
She's always worried about things like that
She says it's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe it
She's got a little bit of something, god it's better than nothing
And in her color portrait world she believes that she's got it all
She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
Oh, when she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this
She believes that life isn't made up of all that you're used to
And the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days, and days
She thinks that happiness is the mat that sits on her doorway
But outside it stopped raining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this
Well it's three a.m. I must be lonely
Well hell, when she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
