Glass Onion
The Beatles瀀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I told you about strawberry fields
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here's another place you can go
Where everything flows.

Looking through the bent-backed tulips
To see how the other half live
Looking through a glass onion.

I told you about the walrus and me, man
You know we're as close as can be, man
Well here's another clue for you all
The walrus was Paul.

Standing on the cast iron shore, yeah
Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet, yeah
Looking through the glass onion

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Looking through the glass onion.

I told you about the fool on the hill
I tell you man he's living there still
Well here's another place you can be
Listen to me.

Fixing a hole in the ocean

Trying to make a dove-tail joint, yeah
Looking through a glass onion.

Overall Meaning

In "Glass Onion," The Beatles are taking a satirical look back at some of their previous songs, in particular those that have been overinterpreted by their listeners. The song title itself is a reference to the idea of peeling back layers to reveal deeper meaning, much like peeling an onion. The opening lines reference "Strawberry Fields," a popular hit, and the idea of escaping reality into a dream world. However, in "Glass Onion," the singer challenges the listener to find another place where "everything flows" - suggesting that perhaps the fantasy worlds of music are not so removed from reality after all.

The second verse takes a more specific shot, referencing the "bent-backed tulips" line from "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." The singer asks listeners to look at how "the other half" live and see things through a "glass onion" - in other words, to look at things with a more critical eye.

The third verse is a continuation of the previous verse, referencing the song "I Am the Walrus" and the idea that Paul McCartney is the "walrus" - the singer also mentions other Beatles songs to show how interconnected their music is. The final verse adds "Fool on the Hill" to the mix and encourages the listener to "fix a hole" in the ocean - a suggestion that perhaps it's futile to try to find meaning in everything. Overall, "Glass Onion" is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on how listeners take things too seriously and suggests that sometimes, it's better to just enjoy the music without trying to find hidden meanings.

I really hope we keep getting more knives out movies. They could become a pretty iconic series of movies if done right

Fidgetz

There's at least going to be a third one, the deal he made with Netflix was for at least Knives Out 2 and 3!

ProprietaryCurez

@Fidgetz Knives out was a very good movie. 👌

Jon

@Fidgetz Unless they're abominably bad, there's going to be way more than three. Netflix paid nearly half a billion dollars for the rights to the series. (Way too much, which I'm sure they understood.) They'll need to milk it for all it's worth.

Alexis 88

Totally agree.

Fidgetz

@Jon completely agree, I was just saying it's guaranteed there will be at least a 3rd, but if they are semi decent I am sure they'll keep it going
