Good Morning Good Morning
The Beatles瀀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing to do to save his life call his wife in
Nothing to say but what a day how's your boy been
Nothing to do it's up to you
I've got nothing to say but it's okay
Good morning, good morning

Going to work don't want to go feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam then you're in town
Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own you're in the street
Good morning, good morning

After a while you start to smile now you feel cool
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school
Nothing has changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's okay
Good morning, good morning

People running round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town is getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife
Somebody needs to know the time, glad that I'm here
Watching the skirts you start to flirt now you're in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes

I've got nothing to say but it's okay
Good morning, good morning

Overall Meaning

The Beatles’ “Good Morning Good Morning” is a song that speaks to the mundane routine of everyday life. The lyrics capture the monotony of the day-to-day as it follows the narrative of a man who wakes up with nothing to do and has to call his wife for something to occupy himself. The chorus line, “Good morning, good morning,” is a greeting that we exchange every day, but in the song, it takes on a sarcastic tone.

The second verse of the song is about going to work, which the singer isn’t excited about doing. In fact, he’s feeling quite down about it. When the workday ends, he starts to wander around town, noticing that everything is closed, and the people he encounters are half-asleep. However, after some time, he begins to feel better and decides to take a walk around the old school. The singer remarks that “nothing has changed, it’s still the same” and yet, he’s in a better mood.

The final verse discusses how the town changes after 5 o’clock, and people become more lively. The singer watches the skirts and starts to flirt before heading to a show, hoping that the girl he likes will follow him. These lyrics depict the daily routine of the singer in a dull, grey world where nothing ever changes. Yet despite the mundanity of everyday life, the singer finds a way to make it through the day.
