Help!
The Beatles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Help, not just anybody
Help, you know I need someone, help
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like I've never done before
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh
The Beatles' song "Help!" was written by John Lennon as a cry for help during a period of personal turmoil. The lyrics are a plea for assistance, highlighting the change in his own psyche as he grew older and the once-independent Lennon found himself struggling to cope with the various problems in his life. The first verse splits into two sections; the first consisting of the title of the song repeated three times, with each repetition more fervent and seeking more assistance than the last. The second section highlights the contrast between Lennon's former self-assuredness and his current state of vulnerability. In the second verse, Lennon explores how his independence has dissipated and he has become more reliant on others, even though he once used to scoff at people who needed help. The chorus and the third verse repeat the same message, with Lennon begging for help and admitting his struggles.
The song's catchy melody and lyrics set it apart from the rest of the Beatles' early work. Despite being a chart hit, the song harbored a deep sense of melancholy that was quite different from the cheerful tunes associated with the Beatles. The song's lyrics were lauded for being relatable and honest at a time when rock songs tended to mask deeper feelings with innuendos and metaphors. Even though the song laments a difficult time in Lennon's life, it would go on to become one of the Beatles' most enduring hits, with enduring appeal to people experiencing their own crises.
