Blackbird
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Overall Meaning

The song "Yesterday" by The Beatles is a melancholic and contemplative ballad that deals with the theme of lost love and the longing for the past. The lyrics describe a man who is haunted by the memories of yesterday, when his troubles seemed to be far away and love was an easy game to play. Suddenly, his life has taken a turn for the worse and he feels like he is not the same person anymore, with a shadow hanging over him. He tries to make sense of why his lover had to leave him, and he realizes that he might have said something wrong that led to their separation. Now, he yearns for the past when everything was simpler and he believes that he can find solace in those memories.

The song's main message is about the power of memories and the way they can shape our present and future. The singer of the song is struggling to come to terms with his loss and he finds comfort in the nostalgia of yesterday. The lyrics are simple, but they convey a universal emotion that everyone can relate to - the feeling of heartbreak and the desire to turn back time. The song's melody is equally poignant, with a haunting string section that perfectly captures the mood of the lyrics.

My lovely dad died two years ago. He loved birds and told me people only praise the lark song so much because it's rare. If blackbirds weren't in nearly every garden people would recognise that theirs is the most beautiful song of all British birds.
