Dear Prudence
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

Dear Prudence, open up your eyes
Dear Prudence, see the sunny skies
The wind is low, the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence, won't you open up your eyes?

Look around, 'round ('round, 'round, 'round)
('Round, 'round, 'round, 'round, 'round)
Look around, 'round, 'round ('round, 'round)
('Round, 'round, 'round, 'round, 'round)
Look around (ahh)

Dear Prudence, let me see you smile
Dear Prudence, like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain
So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence, won't you let me see you smile?

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue

It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

Overall Meaning

The Beatles wrote the song "Dear Prudence" during their stay in India in 1968, where they took part in a transcendental meditation course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Prudence Farrow, the sister of actress Mia Farrow, was also present in the course, and she was so dedicated to meditation that she secluded herself in her room for days. John Lennon, who was concerned about her well-being, wrote this song to coax her out of her room and enjoy the beauty and wonder of the outside world.

The lyrics are a mix of Lennon's care for Prudence and a message to embrace life and nature around her. The song is full of inviting imagery, urging Prudence to "come out to play" and "open up your eyes" to "the sunny skies" and "low wind" and to "see the daisy chain" made of clouds. Lennon's affectionate call for Prudence to "smile like a little child" is his way of saying that the world is full of delights if only one has the openness to experience them.
