Associations: childhood at Hampton Beach, NH. Walking along the boardwalk, and this album blaring out of a P.A. I was all of 6. Must've been just after it came out that summer. This track is literally Sunshine. It's a great track to open up side 2, although i now have it on cd, I remember I used to love listening to She Said She Said then turning it over and Good Day Sunshine would come blasting out of my speakers. Another great McCartney track.

Paul got the inspiration to write this from the Lovin Spoonful hit Daydream. Similar happy carefree lyrics, same deliberate 4/4 rhythm. And since John Sebastian said Daydream was itself based on the Supremes' Baby Love, you can consider Good Day Sunshine indirectly descended from that song too. Fine song regardless.

Yesterday I learned that George is the one playing that killer bass line on this cut.

I've always loved the man's guitar playing. But learning this has me in awe somewhat. This leads much credence to when he said he played bass on "Drive My Car" and on "Old Brown Shoe". Only time will tell with the remix of Rubber Soul and its tracks gone through and dissected. And for whenever they hopefully put together singles and B-sides remix box set out...

Regarding who played drive my car, the riff on that song(influenced by Duck Dunn's bass line on Otis Redding's Respect) is indeed written by George, but it is played by Paul on bass. If you listen to the coda, you can hear arpeggios that sound like Paul, to me anyway. I've never heard a source saying George played bass on it! Though it does sound plausible, either way, it sounds really good(especially when it doubles the piano)!

@You Tube['s Lonely Hearts Club Band] Yes, I am very aware of that part, his inspiration for it. Which was the story that made me start to wise up to his talent along with going through their entire body of work and really listening out for his parts when I first got into them a decade or so ago now.

I heard him say that in what was most likely a misquote there. Or a case misremembering who played what. I do know that he very likely tracked on his Strato alongside the part Paul played to thicken up the sound and give it bite, something I have read about in several places. (Even a quote by him if I am not mistaken.) A very handy trick I'm pretty sure can be heard for the bass in OBS as well.

Either way, he has said he had a hand at the bass line in both. Whether he actually played the bass on either is not that important. The fact he can write such rocking lines is testament enough to his potential abilities on one. But I would be in very strong favor that he could lay down a good low end every now and then. And perhaps did this for their work from Rubber Soul on. Which I am very excited to find out about as the back catalogue is worked through backwards and possibly given remixes.
