In 1966, John Lennon was in Almeria (Spain) filming Richard Lester's action comedy "How I Won the War" in which he played the bespectacled supporting character (The Gripweed Musketeer) and was taking a break from the Beatles and the anxiety and loss of intimacy that came with being part of them.
Being in the villa, the wrought iron gates and lush gardens reminded Lennon of those days when he played in "Strawberry Field," a Salvation Army-owned garden near his childhood home in Liverpool.
With that feeling in his heart, he hastened to complete a nostalgia-laden melody he had begun to shape on a previous tour of the United States and reflected on the clear-sky beaches of Almeria as he plucked the strings of his inseparable acoustic guitar to shape "It's Not Too Bad", a composition that would later become the psychedelic rock classic "Strawberry Fields Forever". This is how the "Santa Isabel demos" were born.

It's a great glimpse into John's creative process. He keeps refining it as he goes along and continues to develop the song. Basically that's what every songwriter does, but I love John Lennon and let's face it, he was a great songwriter and singer. So I particularly enjoy the metamorphosis of songs like this from John.

As much as I love the embryonic stage of Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever, have you had the chance to watch Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary?
There's an unforgettable spine tingling moment where Paul, George and Ringo are in Twickenham Studios and Paul is strumming on his bass guitar, ooing a tune and mumbling words.
You sense straight away that he was trying to create a song and then from nowhere, from out of his mind, he comes up the beginning of Get Back.
It wasn't a demo that he was working on and then took it with him into the studio.
Caught for the first time on film was the creation of a classic Lennon/McCartney song.
No exaggeration... It was awe inspiring.
