Mother
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Born a poor young country boy
Mother Nature's son
All day long I'm sitting singing songs for everyone.

Sit beside a mountain stream
See her waters rise
Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies.
Find me in my field of grass
Mother Nature's son
Swaying daisies sing a lazy song beneath the sun.

Mother Nature's son.

Overall Meaning

The song "Mother Nature's Son" by The Beatles is a simple and beautiful tribute to the natural world. The first verse describes the singer's humble beginnings as a poor young country boy, who spends his days singing songs for anyone who will listen. The second verse invites the listener to join the singer in observing a mountain stream, watching its gentle rise and listening to the music of its movement. Finally, the chorus returns to the singer's idyllic existence in a field of grass, surrounded by swaying daisies and basking in the warmth of the sun.

Throughout the song, the singer expresses a deep love and appreciation for the natural world. In doing so, he connects with a tradition of poets, artists, and thinkers who have sought to find inspiration in the beauty and majesty of nature. At the same time, however, the song hints at a certain loneliness or isolation, as the singer seems to exist primarily in the company of the natural world rather than human society. This tension between connection and solitude, between the beauty of nature and the limits of human experience, gives "Mother Nature's Son" its emotional power.

The most heart wrenching song ever written- Lennon sings and imitates himself as a 5year old child screaming out for his parents who left him. Only Lennon could write this. This is what makes him a a great song writer.

It must be one of the saddest songs ever written. The pleas of a grown up child.

Thank god for Mimi. Did he ever write a song about her?

@BrianJohnstonTrombone

Not sure. He did buy a very nice home for her as a thank you for her love.

It’s the pleas and pain of a little boy, not a grown person. Those of us who have experienced Primal Therapy, as John did, can understand the exquisite poignancy of those screams. This songs still takes me back to the deep yearning of a small girl who desperately needed the love of my parents.
