"Real Love" was subsequently reworked by the three remaining members of The Beatles (Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) in late 1995. The song was released as a Beatles single in 1996 in the United Kingdom, United States and many other countries; it was the opening track on The Beatles' Anthology 2 album. It is the last "new" credited Beatles song to originate and be included on an album.
"Real Love" was warmly received by some critics, and the single reached #4 and #11 in the UK and US singles charts respectively and earned a gold record faster than a number of the group's other singles. The song was not included on the British Broadcasting Corporation's Radio 1 playlist, prompting criticism from fans and members of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
After the release of "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love", Starr commented: "Recording the new songs didn't feel contrived at all, it felt very natural and it was a lot of fun, but emotional too at times. But it's the end of the line, really. There's nothing more we can do as The Beatles.”

Lost like some forgotten dreams
Seems that all I really was doing
Was waiting for you
Just like little girls and boys
Playing with their little toys
Seems like all they really were doing
Don't need to be alone
No need to be alone
It's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
From this moment on I know
Exactly where my life will go
Seems that all I really was doing
Was waiting for love
Don't need to be afraid
No need to be afraid
It's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
Thought I'd been in love before
But in my heart, I wanted more
Seems like all I really was doing
Was waiting for you
Don't need to be alone
Don't need to be alone
It's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
It's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
It's real love, it's real
Yes, it's real love, it's real
It's real love, it's real
The lyrics to The Beatles’ song “Real Love” express a sense of hope and fulfillment that comes from finding true love. The singer describes their previous plans and dreams as forgotten and unimportant in comparison to the love they have found. It is as though they have been waiting for this person to come into their life and make everything else seem insignificant. The lyrics also suggest a feeling of security that comes with this newfound love - they no longer feel the need to be alone or afraid.
The second verse of the song compares the singer’s experience to that of children playing with their toys, suggesting that their previous pursuits in life were essentially futile until they found love. The final verse admits that the singer had thought they had been in love before but realizes now that they were waiting for something more. The repetition of the phrase “It’s real love” reinforces the idea that this love is genuine and transformative.
The overall message of the song is about the power of love to bring meaning and happiness into one’s life. It suggests that everything else we might have been striving for pales in comparison to the joy and fulfillment that comes with finding someone who truly loves us.
