Nobody
The Beatles & Tony Sheridan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was slowly passing
An orphan's home one day,
I stopped for just a little while
To watch the children play.
Alone a boy was standing
And when I asked him why,
He turned with eyes that could not see
And he began to cry.

I'm nobody's child,
I'm nobody's child.
Just like the flowers
I'm growing wild.
I got no mummy's kisses
I got no daddy's smile.
Nobody wants me,
I'm nobody's child.

No mummy's arms to hold me
Or sue me when I cry,
'Cause sometimes I feel so lonesome
I wish that I could die.
I'll walk the streets of heaven
Where all blinds can see.

And just like for the other kids
It will be a home for me.

I'm nobody's child,
I'm nobody's child.
Just like the flowers
I'm growing wild.
I got no mummy's kisses
I got no daddy's smile.

Nobody wants me,
I'm nobody's child.

Overall Meaning

The song "Nobody's Child" was written by Cy Coben and Mel Foree and was famously covered by The Beatles in 1960. The lyrics are heart-wrenching and tell the story of a young boy who is an orphan and feels unwanted and unloved. As the singer passes by an orphanage, he notices a boy who is standing alone and crying. When he asks the boy why he is crying, the boy responds that he is nobody's child and has no one to love him.

The lyrics touch on themes of abandonment, loneliness, and the desire for love and connection. The boy in the song longs for the same things that any child would want - the love and attention of a mother and father. But because he is an orphan, he feels like he is unwanted and unloved.

The final verse of the song is particularly poignant. The boy talks about walking the streets of heaven where all blinds can see, indicating that even in death he is longing for a place where he can be loved and accepted. The lyrics highlight the societal issue of children in need of care and protection and the importance of providing them with love, support, and a sense of belonging.

I wish, I had been an adult when this type of music AND the Beatles were in their heyday. This rocks, wow I could only imagine what it would be like in a place like the Cavern or a small stage pub hearing something with this much energy. NO autotune, NO crappy singing croaking like frogs or worse, but all fun. You can hear the fun they are having performing. I know you can find this music in some venues here and there but its work to find it. So wish I had been alive and an adult then, Music on the radio today is so lifeless and over perfected to me. Maybe it's just me. I wish they would play this on our indie stations where I live at least. Well I have youtube to get to hear it I an thankful for that!

@papercup2517

it's not just you! I know exactly what you mean. :-)

@davidgibbes5530

@PaperCup me too

@carloss3534

You're not the only one thinking this way. I am 63 and had the fortune of growing with the best of this kind of music. Lucky me!

@1510Ronald

this time was exactly in Hamburg on the Reeperbahn - without Tony Sheridan the Beatles where not be

@pauljarzemsky3256

I own the CD of this recording. The liner notes that came with it state that the band backing Tony Sheridan on this recording was Joey Dee & the Starlighters. They were from New Jersey and were the house band at the Peppermint Lounge in New York, and had a huge hit in the mid 60s called "Peppermint Twist". If you listen to it you can hear their "sound" is very similar to the instrumentation on this recording.

@rosemariebarnes175

Only on backing vocals, the band was The Beatbrothers.

@davidlamb7524

Who is playing the organ ?
