Ticket to Ride
The Beatles Recovered Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away

She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

She said that living with me
Is bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around

She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me

I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away, yeah

Oh, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me

She said that living with me
Is bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around

Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

My baby don't care, my baby don't care

My baby don't care, my baby don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care (fade out)

Overall Meaning

The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride” is a song mostly written by John Lennon, but credited to Lennon-McCartney. From the onset, the lyrics suggest a man on the brink of heartbreak. The singer thinks he’s going to be sad and that today is the day his girl is leaving him. The girl that’s driving him mad is going away and this is causing him great distress. The girl has a ticket to ride, but she doesn't care. The second verse of the song seems to suggest that she's leaving because he's bringing her down and she could never be free when he's around.

The pre-chorus, “I don't know why she's riding so high, she ought to think twice, she ought to do right by me, before she gets to saying goodbye, she ought to think twice, she ought to do right by me,” suggests that the singer is aware that his girl is leaving, but doesn't have any control over her decision to leave him. She has the freedom to leave regardless of the effect it will have on him. The song ends with the singer accepting the situation and acknowledging that his girl doesn’t care about his feelings.
