The Beau Brummels broke into the mainstream with their debut single, "Laugh, Laugh", for which they would later be credited for setting the aesthetic foundation for the San Francisco Sound. The band's popularity continued with the subsequent album, 1965's Introducing the Beau Brummels, and the Top 10 single "Just a Little". The group's commercial success declined by the following year, at which time the financially struggling Autumn label was acquired by Warner Bros. Records. After recording an album of cover songs, Beau Brummels '66, the band released a pair of critically acclaimed albums: Triangle in 1967 and Bradley's Barn in 1968.
The band underwent several personnel changes, beginning with Mulligan's departure in 1965. Guitarist Don Irving joined the band in late 1965 when Elliott began to suffer seizures resulting from a diabetic condition, leaving him unable to tour with the band. Shortly after the release of Beau Brummels '66, Irving left the group when he was inducted into the armed forces. Petersen left to join Harpers Bizarre, reducing the Beau Brummels to a trio for the recording of Triangle. Meagher was drafted for military service in 1968, leaving Valentino and Elliott as the only remaining band members. The duo worked with prominent Nashville session musicians to record Bradley's Barn before parting ways in 1969 to focus on solo material and participate in projects by other artists. The five original Beau Brummels reformed in 1974, and the band released an eponymous album the following year.

Staring at the squares on the wall...
Hey, I'm walking in the evening
Hoping that it's not my fa-ult...
Yes, I'm fumbling and stumbling
Words that I'm jumbling
Fearing and glaring
On... the road... again
Hey, I'm looking for a friend
Looking for a friend
Around the break of day
All those people talking at me
Not so very much that I can say, "Hey, hey."
Still I'm flipping and tripping
Sometimes slipping, funny and running
I'll think about sunning
On... the road... again
Now I'm looking through the glass
Looking through the glass of a soda pop bottle
Oh, summer's here and now
But outside in a raincoat there stands a model
Well, I'm thinking that drinking
Starts you into sinking
Forget regret that you're not home yet
On... the road... again
I'm walking by the seaside
Looking at the girlies
Walking down by the beach
Yes, I sit and watch the lifeguards
Scheming on the talent
Walking down by the beach
Yes, I seeking to meeting
People hide and seeking
Walking and talking
Watching people balking
On... the road... again
Ya, I'm on... the road... again
Yes, I'm on... the road... again...
The Beau Brummels's song On the Road Again is an invitation to take a journey, to break away from routine, and to enjoy life. The song begins with the singer standing in the shower, staring at the squares on the wall, which metaphorically represent the routine and monotony of everyday life. However, the singer is hopeful that he can break free from this routine and that his fumbling and stumbling on the road again will lead him to new experiences.
Throughout the song, the singer seems to be seeking friendship, connection, and excitement. He is walking in the evening, looking for a friend, and hoping to find someone to talk to. As he continues his journey, he encounters people talking to him, but he doesn't have much to say in return. He's flipping and tripping, sometimes slipping, but he's also funny and running. He thinks about sunning and enjoying life on the road again.
The chorus emphasizes the theme of seeking and learning through the journey. The singer is seeking to meet new people, to hide and seek, to walk and talk, and to watch people balking. He's on the road again, ready to embrace the unknown and take on new experiences.
