Help
The Beetles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Help!) I need somebody
(Help!) Not just anybody
(Help!) You know I need someone
(Help!)

(When)
When I was younger
(When I was young)
So much younger than today
(I never need)
I never needed anybody's help in any way

(Now)
But now these days are gone
(These days are gone)
I'm not so self-assured
(And now I find)
Now I find I've changed my mind
And opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

(Now)
And now my life has changed
(My life has changed)
In oh, so many ways
(My indepen)
My independence seems to vanish in the haze

(But)
But every now and then
(Now and then)
I feel so insecure
(I know that I)
I know that I just need you like
I never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

When I was younger
So much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way

(Now)
But now these days are gone
(These days are gone)
I'm not so self-assured
(And now I find)
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

Help me, help me, ooh!

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' song "Help" is an iconic portrayal of the feelings of vulnerability that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. The song opens with a desperate call for help, conveying the singer's sense of urgency and need for someone to turn to. The lyrics emphasize the notion that even those who consider themselves strong-willed and independent can struggle and require support in their times of need.

The second verse recalls how the singer was once self-reliant but has now recognized the value of having someone trustworthy to lean on. They reflect on how their life has changed and how their independence seems to have vanished in the haze, and they have become more vulnerable. The song has an almost solemn tone, but there is still a sense of hope in the chorus as the singer asks for someone to help them and expresses their gratitude for their presence.

In summary, "Help" by The Beatles is a heart-wrenching plea for assistance that speaks to the universal human experience of vulnerability and the necessity of relying on others for support.
