Indian Summer
The Belle Stars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunlight warming on my back
The music filtered through the trees
Then you played me one more track
We were moving with the breeze

Magic moments on my mind
Moved together like sun and moon
Seemed like fate was being kind
Funny how you changed your tune

We were dreamers for a while
You were Bogart, I Becall
We were lovers for a day
Never again will it ever be that way

Passion wanders like the sun
Then you cooled down in the rain
Your love never had begun
Mine was dying left in pain

We were dreamers for a while
You were Bogart, I Becall
We were lovers for a day
Never again will it ever be that way

Why you changed them? I'll never know
One day sunshine, the next was snow
Why you left me on that day?
Never again will it ever be that way

We were dreamers for a while
You were Bogart, I Becall
We were lovers for a day
Never again will it ever be that way

We were dreamers for a while
You were Bogart, I Becall
We were lovers for a day
Never again will it ever be that way

We were dreamers for a while
You were Bogart, I Becall

We were lovers for a day
Never again will it ever be that way

Overall Meaning

The Belle Stars’ song Indian Summer is a wistful and nostalgic tune about a fleeting romance that did not stand the test of time. The opening lines of the song give us a sense of peace and contentment - the warmth of the sun on the singer’s back and music floating through the trees create a picturesque atmosphere. The singer, accompanied by her lover, was moving with the breeze and sharing magic moments. The sun and moon are used as metaphors to describe how in sync the singer and her lover were at the time. Fate seems to be doing them a favor by bringing them together. However, as the second verse begins, it becomes clear that the idyllic imagery is short-lived. The lover, who was initially like Bogart to the singer’s Bacall, suddenly changes his tune, and their paths diverge.

Despite the song’s title, Indian Summer - which refers to the period of unseasonably warm, dry weather in autumn in North America - it is a nostalgic and bittersweet song. As the song progresses, the singer’s lover who was once warm and attentive, cools down in the rain, signifying that the passion which once bound them together has dissipated. The relationship never took off. The repetition of the lines, “We were dreamers for a while, you were Bogart, I Becall, We were lovers for a day, Never again will it ever be that way,” highlights the fleeting nature of their love affair. The singer never understands why her lover changed, why he was warm one day, and cold the next. The song ends on a poignant note, with the singer expressing her regret that things didn’t work out, and it would never be the same again.
