Originally a quartet whose sound drew inspiration from psychedelia, The Beloved found its greatest success as a rave-influenced dance-pop duo. Throughout its fluid existence, the guiding force behind the group remained vocalist Jon Marsh, who formed the band The Journey Through in Cambridge, UK with Steve Waddington and Tim Havard; with the addition of Guy Gausden (November 1984), the group renamed itself the Beloved, and gradually evolved into a moody dance outfit not dissimilar to New Order.
In 1986, The Beloved issued their first single, "A Hundred Words" a series of releases (including the EP Happy Now, the double A-sided single "Surprise Me"/"Forever Dancing" and the 1987 compliation Where It Is) followed, but none garnered any significant critical or commercial success. Consequently, Gousden and Havard exited in 1987, at much the same time Marsh and Waddington were falling under the sway of London's burgeoning rave community. After first re-emerging with the ambient-styled single "The Sun Rising" the Beloved then scored an international hit with "Hello" a bubbling techno exercise which name-checked many of the group's influences.
In 1990, the duo issued a pair of albums, Happiness and Blissed Out (a remix of its sister release) which achieved significant success both in and out of clubs. A long layoff followed, however, and when The Beloved returned in 1993 with Conscience, Waddington had been ousted in favor of Marsh's wife Helena, resulting in a more pop-oriented flavour. After another three-year absence, they released X, a foray back into club culture. In 1997 they released Single File, a compilation album and a bunch of new remixes of The Sun Rising.
Jon Marsh has for some ten years been concentrating on his flourishing career as a club DJ, as well as the raising of his young family. However, a new collaboration with Steve Waddington is in the works, and while the Beloved's plans for a new album release in 2006 never came to fruition, it is apparently still in the works.

Your Love Takes Me Higher
The Beloved Lyrics

Let me tell you that I've had enough
I've had enough of your playing away
And then I've only got one thing to say
It's the kind of love that leaves me burning with desire
If you think of me, if you care
Stop your fooling 'round because it's going nowhere
Baby, well, let me tell you the one thing that's true
I've got to try to get through to you
I've had enough of your playing away
And now I've only got one thing to say
Only your love takes me higher
It's the kind of love that leaves me burning with desire
If you think of me, if you care
Stop your fooling 'round because it's going nowhere
Ask me, I will recommend
Something that will surely put your troubles at an end
All this heartache's more than I can bear
It's still going nowhere, nowhere
Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere
Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere
Only your love takes me higher
It's the kind of love that leaves me burning with desire
If you think of me, if you care
Stop your fooling 'round because it's going nowhere
Ask me, I will recommend
Something that will surely put your troubles at an end
All this heartache's more than I can bear
It's still going nowhere, nowhere
It's the kind of love that leaves me burning with desire
Stop your fooling 'round because it's going nowhere
Something that will surely put your troubles at an end
The Beloved's song "Your Love Takes Me Higher" is a heartfelt plea for a lover's commitment sung over an upbeat and catchy dance-pop melody. The lyrics start off with the singer expressing his frustration with his lover's infidelity and playing games in their relationship. He urges his lover to stop fooling around and commit to him. The chorus then shifts to a positive note as the singer declares that only his lover's love can take him higher and leave him burning with desire.
The song's lyrics emphasize the passionate and transformative nature of true love, signified by the power to uplift and inspire. The lyrics also convey a sense of vulnerability and frustration stemming from the singer's unrequited love. He is pleading for his lover to meet him halfway in their relationship, having grown tired of the heartache and uncertainty. The song's repetitive chorus reinforces the idea that true love is worth fighting for and that it has the power to heal and transform.
In terms of the song's production, the instrumentation features a mix of synthesizers, drum machines, and acoustic guitar, giving it an upbeat and contemporary feel. The song's catchy melody, strong vocals, and optimistic lyrics helped it reach number 2 on the UK singles chart in 1990, solidifying its place as one of the defining songs of the era's dance-pop genre.
