Ain't Too Proud To Beg
The Big Chill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know you wanna leave me but I refuse to let you go
If I have to beg, plead for your sympathy
I don't mind 'cause you mean that much to me

Ain't too proud to beg and you know it
Please don't leave me girl
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, girl

Now I heard a cryin' man
Is half a man with no sense of pride
But if I have to cry to keep you
I don't mind weepin' if it'll keep you by my side

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me girl
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me girl

If I have to sleep on your doorstep
All night and day just to keep you from walkin' away
Let your friends laugh, even this I can stand
'Cause I want to keep you any way I can

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me girl
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me girl

Now I've gotta love so deep in the pit of my heart
And each day it grows more and more
I'm not ashamed to come and plead to you baby
If pleadin' keeps you from walkin' out that door

Ain't too proud to beg, you know it
Please don't leave me girl
Ain't too proud to plead, baby, baby

Please don't leave me girl
Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby

Overall Meaning

The Big Chill's song "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" is about a man who is pleading with his girlfriend not to leave him. He is so in love with her that he is willing to do anything to keep her by his side, even if that means begging and pleading for her to stay. The lyrics express the idea that it is better to beg for love than to be too proud to do so and end up losing someone who means so much to you.

The opening lines "I know you wanna leave me but I refuse to let you go" show the desperation of the man to keep his girlfriend from leaving him. He is willing to beg and plead for her love, and he sees this as a way to show her just how much she means to him. He is not afraid to cry or to be seen as a half-man with no sense of pride if it means that he can keep her by his side.

The chorus of the song is a repetition of the phrase "Ain't too proud to beg" which reinforces the idea that one should not be too proud to ask for love. The lyrics are emotional and heartfelt, and they express the idea that love is worth fighting for even if it means begging and pleading.

I won't say that my frat brothers (Duke, Class of 1977), their wives and I do either kitchen dances or play air guitar when we have reunions, because we don't. (Thank God, because my dancing makes Elaine Benes look like Cyd Charisse). But this charming moment from "The Big Chill" EXACTLY captures the mood and spirit of our times together. Within a few minutes, we slip back effortlessly into the patterns and rhythms of our old times from forty-plus years ago: nicknames, reminiscences, catching up, toasting our deceased brothers and sisters, the works. Thomas Wolfe was right -- You Can't Go Home Again -- but you CAN both remember and reenact what made that home so sweet. As Vladimir Nabokov said: "Speak, Memory."

I saw thiss in 1983 the week after I turned 33. Now seeing this clip, and remembering the decade, and knowing what's coming, I'm ready to go.

Kevin Kline is the only actor who I've ever heard that can actually sound like a low country South Carolinian without having lived there.

Did you know when they did the Dance Scene, they had to "Pretend" that they were listening to The Music, then they put the music in afterwards.
