The Road
The Big Moon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Throw me a bone
The night it trickles like the sleeping sand
And the roads in my hands,
This all'd heal, it's stuck in every drain

Tell me why you came
'Cause I don't know why people can change
And now I'm not the same
And heaven help me
Now I've got no good reason to stay
And now I'm not the same

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

Time hanging limp
It sulks around and whisks the sky to strands
But I can tame you, my man
Now I can see you through your lion's mane

Tell me why you came
'Cause I don't know why people can change
And know I'm not the same
And heaven help me
Now I've got no good reason to stay
And now I'm not the same

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

Tell me why you came
'Cause I don't know why people can change
And know I'm not the same
And heaven help me

Now I've got no good reason to stay
And now I'm not the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Big Moon's song The Road seem to be exploring themes of change and uncertainty. The song begins with an image of a lonely figure desperately searching for something to hold onto ("Throw me a bone"), with the night trickling by and the roads seemingly in their hands. They seem to be holding on to the hope that things will get better, that the pain they feel now will heal ("This all'd heal, it's stuck in every drain").

However, the song quickly shifts focus to the person who has caused this pain, with the singer asking "Tell me why you came" and lamenting that they don't understand why people can change so easily. The line "And now I'm not the same" suggests that something has happened to the singer to cause them to lose their sense of self, and they are now desperately searching for a reason to stay.

As the song progresses, the singer seems to gain a sense of control, claiming that they can "tame" the person who has caused their pain and see through their "lion's mane". However, this newfound agency seems to be tempered by the fact that the singer still can't understand why people change, and they are still searching for a reason to hold on.

Overall, The Road seems to be a powerful exploration of the difficulty of dealing with change and uncertainty, and the desperation we can feel when things don't go as planned. The song's haunting melody and powerful lyrics make for a truly captivating listening experience.

Twee up your life...

I still am bewildered by having been sent here by google (not this video actually, but the first video youtube ever served...at least that ive noticed...by this group was following some weeks straight of listening exclusively to bands like Cub, but there was some alvvays in there, but more roger miller than pumpkin heads or radiohead... More malkmus than nirvana... Something like that... Im pleased - this is good stuff.

{With the assumption that, by posting a comment, i am speaking clearly and perceived in shimmering regard - i'm a realist...humor me...}

Shit, the part that was quippy or whitty or sardonically salacious satirical shucks...oof... Why does this happen with the text...? It just grows like ... From nothing and siddenly, ive two streams of consciousness... This one, and the like, ya jnow, peanut gallery of lower-brain projections and familiar fascimiles, maybe some vague authority figure, all as iterations of myself - as, since like, forever, ive known the truth about the north pole, and since then, ive mostly revised all internal monologue to iterations of my own voice... Its best, anyone else's behins to effect your very identity...so, that's the take-away, boys&girls...when you talk to yourself, use your own voice...

....well, congrats...

Youve inspired me to comment.

Enjoi your prize.
