Hannah Levin's review of the Black Angels album, Passover, described them as "Walking in the shadows cast by Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized mastermind Jason Pierce" and compared them to The Warlocks and Black Mountain, also invoking "dirges" reminiscent of both The Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators. The band's icon is a stylized image of Nico.
In December 2007, the group announced on their blog that their second album would be released in Spring of 2008. In March 2008 a release date of May 13th was announced for their second album, Directions to See a Ghost. Their third album was "Phosphene Dream" released in 2010. This record is slowly starting to give Black Angels international recognition.

Black Grease
The Black Angels Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Moody and controlled, sly and involved
You're alright, you come to me in times
You make me realize I'm not the kindest guy
But I give, give, give, give
I give what I can give
So just give, give, give, give
Slow, you kept me in that storm
You showed me things galore
Made me want much more
And now denied, the things I saw inside
The things I saw inside is what really caught my eye
And you give, give, give, give
Just give what you can
And I'll live, live, live, live
Live while I can, dear
You're so surprised, you see me put up fights
You hear me realize, you come along for rides
You're just so kind, the eagle with red wine
You made me see that fine line between me and time
To just kill, kill, kill, kill
You kill what you can
And you kill, kill, kill, kill
Anything you want
The lyrics of "Black Grease" by The Black Angels is a tribute to the stormy and emotionally complex nature of a lover. The singer describes their lover as someone who is both moody and controlled at the same time. However, despite their tumultuous nature, the singer still feels drawn to them, especially during times when they come seeking comfort. In this way, the lyrics can be interpreted as a meditation on the highs and lows of a romantic relationship, where moments of tenderness and intimacy are interspersed with bouts of conflict and uncertainty.
The second verse is particularly interesting, as it describes the transformative power of the relationship. The singer feels as though their lover has opened their eyes to new experiences and ways of being. However, the singer also seems to be struggling with some kind of denial, as if the things they saw inside their lover were too intense to fully accept. Nevertheless, they still feel compelled to chase after these fleeting moments of clarity and insight.
Overall, the lyrics of "Black Grease" convey a sense of longing and desire, as well as a willingness to navigate the complex emotional terrain of a romantic relationship in order to find moments of connection and meaning.

tina
isn't it "that fine line" instead of bright eye, near the end?
purplestuff
@tina Isn't it also "but evil" with red wine?
tina
@purplestuff i think so (and makes sense too?) not sure what I'm hearing at this point lol
purplestuff
@tina It makes a lot more sense than "eagle of red wine" which I will now be using instead of "cougar" when talking about older women.
