Most of Thickfreakness was recorded in about 14 hours in Carney's basement, using only an early 80's Tascam 388 8-track recorder. Often, their recordings still have background noises (such as an owl hooting).

And what I found was not alright with me
Desperation, suffocation
And it'd been the same thing all along
Goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon
Now I know times are changing
And the people need rearranging
So now it's written here in song
Goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon
Now our boys they're falling
Our leaders are all appalling
And you can bet by God
Good will is gone
Goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon
Oh, goodbye Babylon
Goodbye Babylon, hey
The lyrics to The Black Keys' Goodbye Babylon are a critical commentary on the state of society and politics. The singer is voicing their discontent with the status quo, which is characterized by desperation and suffocation. The use of the word "Babylon" is significant, as it is often used in biblical texts to describe a corrupt and oppressive society. In this context, it can be interpreted as a metaphor for the current state of the world. The repetition of "Goodbye Babylon" throughout the song is a powerful statement of defiance against the oppressive system.
The singer acknowledges that times are changing, but suggests that the people also need to change for real progress to occur. It is through music and art that the singer believes change can be affected. By writing this song, they are actively taking a stand against the corrupt leaders and falling systems of power. The final lines of the song are particularly poignant: "Good will is gone // Goodbye Babylon." The implication is that there is no hope for redemption in the current system, and that a new approach is needed to create a better world.
