Gotta Get Away
The Black Keys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got paid when I was on the road
In a heartbeat, mama said mama said
You got a one track mind, but you ain't gonna get all the time
She wasn't lyin'

I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo
Just to get away from you
I searched far and wide, hopin' I was wrong
But baby all the good women are gone

My rent's down, got used up
On gasoline, know what I mean, what I mean
Atlanta, GA by the end of the day
No other way, that's what I say

I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo
Just to get away from you
I searched far and wide, hopin' I was wrong
But baby all the good women are gone

And everything I had to say
Wish we'd gone so far away
Well now I
Can't stay

Blacktop, I can't stop
For no one, it's no fun, no fun
With a one track mind if you don't get lucky some time
But still I'm tryin'

I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo
Just to get away from you
I searched far and wide, hopin' I was wrong
But baby all the good women are gone

I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo
Just to get away from you

I searched far and wide, hopin' I was wrong
But baby all the good women are gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Black Keys' song "Gotta Get Away" tells the story of a man who is driven to escape from a relationship that is no longer working. The opening line, "I got paid when I was on the road," sets the tone for the rest of the song. This man's job is to travel, and he is paid for it. His girlfriend/mother says he has a "one track mind," which suggests that he is thinking about work all the time, which is why he wants to get away. The line "You got a one track mind, but you ain't gonna get all the time" reinforces this idea. His girlfriend/mother knows that he won't be able to handle this one track mind all the time. He will eventually want something else.

The chorus of the song, "I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo, just to get away from you," emphasizes that the singer has traveled a lot to try and escape his relationship. However, he recognizes that "all the good women are gone," suggesting that he believes all the women worth being with are already taken. The verse "And everything I had to say, wish we'd gone so far away. Well now I can't stay" reveals that he has a lot to say, but it was not the right time for him to say them. He wishes that they had gone further away so that he could have more time to say what he wanted to say. However, he realizes that he cannot stay in this relationship any longer and must leave.

Overall, "Gotta Get Away" is a song about a man who is in a relationship that is no longer serving him well. He has tried to escape by traveling, but he recognizes that "all the good women are gone," suggesting that he believes he might not find what he is looking for.

I got paid then I was on the road in a heartbeat,
Mama said, mama said,
"You got a one track mind,
But you ain't gonna get it all the time."
She wasn't lyin'

[Chorus:]
I went from San Berdoo to Kalamazoo
Just to get away from you
I searched far and wide, hopin' I was wrong
But baby all the good women are gone

My last dime got used up on gasoline,
What I mean, what I mean
Atlanta, GA
By the end of the day
I'm well away, that's what I say

[Chorus]

And everything I had to say
Wish we'd gone so far away
Well now I can't stay

Blacktop,
I can't stop for no one,
It's no fun, no fun
With a one track mind
If you don't get lucky some time
But still I'm tryin'

[Chorus x2]

I love that they put this song on Shameless, I love the scene where Shiela finally gets sick of Frank's shit and takes off in her RV, he deserved that Shiela is a lovely woman. This song was playing.

Sheila was SO COOL 😎

My daughter keeps asking me to watch shameless again with her - I might have to now lol

in my opinion, this is the best part of the album. It's like when you finish a really good movie and the end credits theme hits real hard. It resolves everything. The whole album is like a little pill you can take whenever you need it, but what kind of medicine leaves you feeling the same as you did before you took it?

@karenielsen4713

Damn.. that was deep :)

@Fantom6400

Imagine if this track here were to have come out sometime between 1977 and 2001 it would have been an instant hit.

@grelley2067

Good song! Who cares if it sounds mainstream or too pop. These guys more capable of writing a good catchy pop song than a lot of artists.

@reecetbobby5347

This is a good song. Brings back some ELO memories for those who are old enough to remember that great band

@khgameplayer

The Black Keys are that band you can listen to on a roadtrip or at a barbeque or at a bar with a few friends, and you'd never get tired of it.
