One of their trademarks is their preference for simple, lo-fi recording techniques. They refuse to use big-name studios, and do most recording, producing, and mixing themselves. Most of Thickfreakness was recorded in about 14 hours in Carney's basement, using only an early 80's Tascam 388 8-track recorder. Often, their recordings still have background noises (such as an owl hooting).

Psychotic Girl
The Black Keys Lyrics

Pick him up just to let him down
It is a shame, baby, but I always knew
Just the way you are going to do, oh
Oh no
Just a psychotic girl
And I won't get lost in your world
Friday night in the party lights
You were acting like everything was alright
Till later on with no one around
Had me fighting for air, laying on the ground, oh no
Oh no
Just a psychotic girl
And I won't get lost in your world
I thought you-d change, but I should have known
You would play nice for a time and then you do me wrong
I thought long and hard about what I should I say
And when I was through it just came out this way, oh no
Oh no
Just a psychotic girl
And I won't get lost in your world
The lyrics of The Black Keys' Psychotic Girl depict a woman who has a pattern of abusing and manipulating her romantic partners. The song starts off with the singer addressing the girl directly, accusing her of physically harming her current partner by picking him up and then dropping him. The lyrics show that the singer was not surprised by the girl’s behavior as he always knew this is how she would treat him. The chorus of the song, "Just a psychotic girl, and I won't get lost in your world," implies that the singer understands and will not be taken in by her manipulation.
As the song progresses, the singer reveals that he was at a party with the girl, and at first, everything seemed perfect. However, when they were alone, the girl attacked him, leaving him fighting for air and lying on the ground. The lyrics reveal a sense of vulnerability and helplessness on his part as he is unable to defend himself against her violent behavior.
In the final verse of the song, the singer expresses his disappointment in the girl and his realization that she will not change her ways. He knew that she would pretend to be kind for a while but would ultimately hurt him in the end. The lyrics suggest a feeling of resignation that there is nothing the singer can do to make her change.
To summarize, The Black Keys' Psychotic Girl is a song that highlights the physical and emotional abuse that some people inflict on their romantic partners. The lyrics show that the singer recognizes this type of behavior in the girl and has resigned himself not to get lost in her world of manipulation and abuse.
