You forgot to mention that during the rebellion and probably a little before, no Scotsman was allowed to speak in their native tongue, wear a kilt or even play bagpipes. The only ones that were allowed to wear the kilt were the soldiers. You pretty much had to give allegiance to the English crown in order to partake in your Scottish heritage.

Even today, because people are affected by the past of how their ancestors were treated; the Black Watch tartan is offensive even though now it is recognized as a universal tartan.
In my opinion it’s a symbol of defiance to say; “How dare anyone tell me that I can’t speak in my native tongue, wear my traditional clothes or play my music”
