Go Burn City Hall
The Blackout Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ive burned out.
Flushed with hearts
I turn back after the fall
And we watch them burn
The ashes slip through your fingers
While you try to grasp what once was yours
Play with matches and people burn.
Why deal me a hand in this?
Its true i could of stopped it
Was it even my place
To stop the start of the end.
WATCH THEM BURN!
I know how you feel
Broken and bruised
I know that you are
Cold and used
And we'll watch them burn
And we'll watch them BURN
The Blackout's song "Go Burn City Hall" is a song that is open to interpretation. However, a plausible interpretation is that the song is about feelings of frustration and helplessness. The lyrics "a thousand times I've waited, I've burned out" can be interpreted as the person's repeated attempts to make a change, but feeling like their efforts have been in vain.
The second verse "the ashes slip through your fingers while you try to grasp what once was yours, but your cries fall on deaf ears, play with matches and people burn," suggests that the person is trying to hold onto something that they have lost, but they can't seem to get it back. The metaphor of "play with matches and people burn" suggests that the actions and decisions of those in power can have severe consequences for the people they govern.
The third verse "why deal me a hand in this, its true I could of stopped it, was it even my place, to stop the start of the end," hints at the feelings of helplessness and frustration. The person questions whether or not it was even their place to try to make a change, or if they should have accepted their fate from the beginning.
Overall, the song may be about feeling powerless in the face of corruption or injustice, and the frustration that comes with not being able to do anything about it. The lyrics "and we'll watch them burn" are a call to action, a statement that despite feeling powerless, they will continue to fight and stand up for what is right.
