Hey Danny, thank you so much. I am becoming the orchid guy at work. I currently have 11 rescues from teachers who receive them and then neglect them. Some of which have come straight out of the garbage. Because of your videos, my rescue success rate has gone way up. Some of my rescues have been incredibly remarkable. I have also taught some teachers how to care for their orchids and my one friend still has blooms from the plant he received in September of last year.

Am pretty sure the little plants cry when they end up at the garbage. You are so nice rescuing, and giving them another chance. I do love orchid!. Actually I do have a total of twenty four, and they are my children. But, my problem is; I can not stop buying them!!.

Went to toss out our garbage and someone had placed 4 very sad looking orchids out for compost. We rehomed them, and thanks to your video series, they are not only very happy in their new pots and medium but one of them has a new set of blooms starting! I trimmed just like you described and I got two babies off one orchid last year. Each on their own flower spike. I got some help and did some research and after they had roots long enough i trimmed and replanted. Both are doing great.

Thank you so much for another great beginner video!! I have become a bit orchid crazy since I found your channel and have amassed 5 phals, 2 cymbidiums and 5 vandas/vanda alliance plants since November. One of my first phals that admittedly was not treated very well initially, until I found your videos, seemed to be set back a bit, growing a small central leaf, but then stalling out. It's starting to grow a bit again, but the leaf looks a bit more pale in color at the base than the rest of the leaf. Is this normal? Could it be because I hadn't properly fertilized it for several months? I'm super paranoid about crown rot because my mokara has already fallen victim (not even sure how it happened :( and super sad about it), but this doesn't look quite like it. I check on the orchid nearly every day and still no brown or yellow color, just a pale green. Should I just ride it out or take action?

Hi Danni, thanks for your videos – I've learned so much! My phalaenopsis orchid blooms have dropped but I have buds developing at the tips of all the flower spikes (and dormant eyes developing below the old buds). Should I do anything to ensure my orchid will grow healthy?

My late mother loved orchids so much. She was able to grow some and took care of them til she passed away in 2014. Vanda, catleya and dendrobiums are the only ones she had and I remember pretty well how she wished to have Phalaenopsis. With this channel, I am now being inspired to fulfill that wish of her. I will try my very best to look for Phalaenopsis and give myself a chance to grow them and take good care of them. Thank you for producing educational videos such as this that help an emerging ochid lover like me to understand more about these beautiful flowering plants. God bless!

My Phal has been growing like crazy. It had two flower spikes when I got it and I didn't trim the spike whatsoever, it grew a lot of new leaves, and some of the roots even grew straight up! Towards the end of December I noticed that there were two new flower spikes coming from the base of the plant and the two previous spikes were flowering. I was gifted with 4 flowering spikes! It is now flowering for a second time on one of the previous spikes, so I've had so far 6 months of flowers :)

So I don't need to trim it and the plant will bloom on the old spikes again too? The part with the trimming confused me, when I do that all the time after the flower bloomed I will end up with sometims don't having any spikes.

Thank you so much!!! Was always bitterly disappointed when the flowers died off and I never got any new flower spikes. Got the wrong advice so no wonder it never worked. Watched this last night and checked out my plant this morning and WOW! I spotted the beautiful little buds hiding and I have now snipped it off in the right place. Can't wait for more flowers and I am definitely getting more plants if the flowers shoot! X

Hello I love your videos they’ve been so helpful as I’m still learning. This is my second orchid. My first I kept alive and well for 3 years then last winter she became sick from root rot and bugs. I was so upset that it died(it was a Mother’s Day gift) my husband bought me a new one. Almost immediately I noticed it was sick. The spagnom moss was compacted and very heavy with water. I repotted the orchid. 3 leaves fell off in January. Last week my last flower bud dropped. Some of the leaves are split, and I’ve noticed the moss is black on top… what can I do to prevent any further damage?

Earlier this summer I trimmed off one of the flower spikes on mine because it was dried up, but the other one looked green stil. After following your fertilizing advice all summer it now has new roots, a new flower spike coming up and the spike I left is putting off new branches and showing signs of buds. I couldn't be happier. We bought it early last year and it stayed blooming all last winter into spring. This is the first time I've ever had an orchid produce new spikes for me. Thanks for all the info you share.

Thank you so much. After my first blooms dropped, I followed your instruction, found a good bud, trimmed the spike as you instructed, continued watering and fertilizing and the bud is now a secondary spike with 5 new flowers. It sits under an air conditioning duct and gets somewhat chilled, if temperature has any effect. After these fall off, I'll re-pot and move the plant to an area with more heat and less light with the hope it'll grow more roots & leaves then put on new spikes and flowers this winter.

My orchid, phalenopsis, had a terrible root problem. All of them got rotten, but it still had blossoms and seems good. I took care of the rotten roots and changed the soil and pot. It was ok, until one day, the one sprout's blossoms all felt down and the sprout became all brown. Cut it down. Now the second's sprout blossoms felt and I cut it a little bellow where the last flower was. Also it had forstly 3leaves. The first got brown and seemed dead, I thought it was cause of the roots, now the second is green but felt, not like the last one still strong. Do you think my orchid will be ok? Will it have again its roots? Will it be healthy? Will it bloom ever again?

Thank you for this wonderful information. I have managed to keep an orchid alive and having beautiful blooms for nearly 2 months now. This is the first time I have managed to keep one alive this long. I used to think of them more like cut flowers that just lasted longer than a few days. I have been bottom watering it once a week (our house is very dry) and letting the roots really soak up the water, but then letting water run through from the top to get the bark saturated really well (again, very dry house). I stumbled onto this video looking for how to take care of the stems the flowers are on, once done blooming. I guess in nature they must die off on their own and grow entirely new ones since nobody is there to trim them. But obviously the care for a plant that is inside a home is going to have some variance to what would occur in nature! I am going to be watching other videos so that I can see when the best time to repot the orchid will be and into the best soil, fertilizing, and also seeing if there are some good watering tips to continue to keep my orchid alive. I told myself that if I can keep this one going, it will be time to get another (or several more).

I followed your directions and am now the proud owner of an additional 5 blooms for a total of 16 since October, 2021! This orchid has just been on steroids. She grew a huge new leaf after I repotted her in January plus put out a new secondary stem. I notice another stem also with the 5 blooms. I plan on not letting her bloom again so will cut back and hope for more new leaves and a new stem this fall. Thank you for all your great info.

I am a beginner with Orchid's and my daughter bought me one for Mother's Day this year and I have no blooms on it and haven't for awhile. I used to be scared to buy orchids because of all the BS there is out there about them.. Water with ice cubes for instance, never did that because i knew that was a not a smart thing to do as these plants never see ice EVER in their natural habitats..

I just had to get back to you to let you know that as a result of your amazing knowledge and accessible information and guidance my poor orchid that looked ready to be binned has a lovely new centre leaf 😮
I gave her a good drink for 15mins and sure enough her poor wee neglected roots turned green.
That is a wonderful thing to know. I never realised that orchids needed a soak like that.
I have sent away for an orchid repotting kit and can’t wait to spruce her up 🙂
Apart from feeling guilty about neglecting the plant I wanted to try and save her because my husband bought me it to cheer me up a few years ago. It’s symbolic of the love of my husband and the determination of the orchid to survive 😌

Hey! I appreciate that you are giving this advice! I got some orchids in the house we bought. I ignored them for ages and they nearly died. I took pity on them and they came back and since then I love them. I was resigned to having sticks with no flowers on some of them for a long time but maybe I can have them in flower more often. I have just repotted them in bigger pots and they have responded by growing leaves, roots and flower spikes! It's all really rewarding and I appreciate having access to your expertise so thank you!

I have just started to learn the joy of orchids. I couldn’t begin to tell what kind I have but it is the common grocery store brand I recused, and actually was overjoyed I got it to regrow! Gorgeous purple and yellow blooms. Thank you for your videos! They help so much! Also started some flytraps. Fingers crossed

Thank you for this video! I am new to orchids and assumed that, now that the flowers on mine are gone, that I wouldn't get more until I got a new spike. I looked and found a dormant bud. I'm glad I hadn't cut the spike. I cut back to just above the bud and now it's over an inch long.

I’ve had a mini orchid in a 2” pot for two years. It’s bloomed every year. This past year, two baby plants sprouted off of the single stem and have roots growing out of each of the baby plants. The mother plant has several leaves and two of the leaves of the mother plant are wrinkly but still very much alive for the past 4 months while the rest of the mother plant leaves, the stem and the two baby plants off the mother plant single stem are thriving and growing. Do you think I need to repot it in new medium and a bigger pot? Roots are healthy but seem kind of small considering how big the orchid has gotten and I don’t want to traumatize or kill the orchid since it’s growing babies of the mother plants single stem.

I recently became an orchid parent to two orchids as condolence gifts and I am determined to do right by them even though I have zero experience. They just finished dropping their blooms and I have been all over the internet trying to find a clear guide on what to do now. They are both behaving very differently. So far everyone seems to assume a bit of starting knowledge or explains only one situation, so there seemed to be a lot of conflicting info. I got gifted an Orchid when I left an old job in June. The flowers had died and the flower spike was drying out. I'd heard and see it was best to cut it off way down at the bottom so thats what I did. I just repotted it today based on one of your other videos. I hope I can get another flower spike!!

Hello! Thanks to your tutoring, my phalaenopsis is thriving, and I have a couple questions? I trimmed the stem, but only to the dormant bud. It's been months, and I have several new leaves and tons of roots, which are now coming out of the holes on the side of the pot. #1 - should I trim the stem all the way down? #2 should I replant again, since I have a ton of new roots? My 10 year old orchid blooms every year. I had no idea you had to repot it. Until one of the leaves started to Yellow. I went to the nursery got everything I needed it is in a beautiful new pot. I'm hoping for the best. I'm counting on you as I followed your video for newbies. I'll keep you posted.

Great videos! A few weeks ago, my waterfall orchid was very healthy, but the blooms were at the end of their cycle and one by one they fell off. The last one fell off about 2 to 3 weeks ago. I am noticing that the two bottom leaves are yellowing. One is almost completely yellow. There are only three leaves on the plant to begin with, as I just got this orchid in January. Should I cut off the yellowing bottom leaves or do I just let them fall off? Thank you.

I got mine to bloom but it is in a heat, fan, light controlled display box the size of a mini-fridge meant for tropical houseplants or herb growing. Thanks for the info, since it is in full yellow bloom right now and looking great. Now will need to learn how to look after it properly to keep it alive. Didn't expect this baby to live, let alone flower again. Leaves also look lush so since is stubborn and wants to thrive, I'll do what I can to give it what it needs, Thanks for your info.

This is a fantastic tutorial. I have trying to get orchids to grow with limited success. From this video I now understand what I was doing right and what unfortunately I did wrong that resulted in no growth. I always thought to underwater, which is obviously not the case watching here. Thank you for the education. Your samples are gorgeous and bring beauty into our world.

Just got three live orchids for a birthday present today. They have always been a challenge to me. My neighbors in Guam had an extensive orchid collection. They imported bark, moss and lava rock to tend their plants. I wish I had picked up some pointers from them.

So glad to watch this video. I thought my orchid has died when all the flowers finished and was going to discard the plant. I found those dormant baby buds in the lower stems after watching this video and trimmed the upper part as instructed in the video. I hope I will see the flowers again in a few months.

Ive learned a lot from your videos on how to take care of orchids.. my husband got me 2 pcs of dendrobium from online store after a week some leaves turned yellow and fall, thanks to video you shared i did what you said i, i check the roots and they're all dead so i cut it out and repotted my plant and they have recovered, and since it stay inside the house i just watered them once a week by soaking the pot into water then throw away the excess and they're all good now one them has 2 new spike i dont know if its leaves or bloom.. yet to find.

I have been keeping track of when my orchid buds and blooms and when the last bloom falls off and the last time I had 8 blooms and they lasted for 9 months that was crazy. The same one is blooming again, bud showed Feb 14th 2020 and has 3 blooms with another bud, so excited that i've finally had success.

Thanks so much. Three gift orchids "seemed" to be "losing it"; now I know the hot summer is growth time, not flowering season.

I WAS a bit suspicious of that, when the first one which had lost ALL its flowers and gotten brown stalks grew new, healthy leaves as it did.

Thanks for putting together such an informative and encouraging video. MUCH better to get it from the "horse's mouth" of a profi than some rumor or hearsay.

Perfect! I have had several for years and I've never repotted or done very much pruning/care. They just sort of live here and I water them. Hahaha, so this will definitely generate me watching more and improving my care of my lil buddies.

I love this channel…..I recently bought my 1st orchids and some orchids were on sale, but as the months go by, I’m now having some problems with my orchids, one died out and it looked like it had too much watering and I did what another said about watering the orchids by watering on the main crown which later I found out was wrong for it, and was too much for it, and caused the orchid to rot, so I’m learning as I go along. Incredible Variety

With as many as 20,000 species throughout the world, the orchid family may be the largest flowering plant family (there are also nearly 100,000 registered hybrids of the orchid). They are found practically everywhere, from the Arctic Circle to semi-desert regions. While some orchids are found in treetops at an altitude of 10,000 feet [3,000 m] in the Andes Mountains, others—such as those in Australia—spend most of their plant life underground.

Orchids come in all sizes and colors and with all kinds of aromas. In Papua New Guinea, some measure many feet high and weigh up to two tons. Others, with flowers the size of the head of a needle, can easily fit inside a thimble. Some orchids grow rooted in the soil, while the majority (called epiphytes) grow on trees or other plants. There are orchids that perfume the air with the faint smell of coconuts or raspberries, while others smell like decaying meat.

Some might ask, ‘Could all these different flowers be from the same family?’ Even with such incredible variation, two features distinguish orchids from other flowering plants. First, orchids have a distinct petal arrangement. Second, orchids have a column that uniquely fuses the male and female reproductive organs.

My mom wanted to get rid of the orchid she received several years ago. It’s leaves are still a vibrant green so I wasn’t going to let that happen. With all of this new information, I am excited to see if I can get the little one healthy and blooming again!

I watched this a few months ago when my orchid was dropping it’s flowers after a couple months in bloom. I trimmed it just like you explained, and guess what?! I have new blooms about ready to open!!!! I’m so excited. I wanted to thank you for your video, and let you know that it worked wonderfully. It took a couple months for it to start branching again, but when it did, it seems to be growing the buds very quickly.

Hi Dannie would you make a video or do you have a video where you can explain a phalaenpsis orchids cycle in their seasons? My orchids are in bloom but I don’t know when to cut to spikes for growth via seasons as they were store brought. I’m in winter and coming into spring and they are still in bloom. When do I expect them to fall or focus on growing new leaves ect I’ve tried googling stuff but it’s confusing.

Wow I received an Orchid as a gift February, bloomed beautifully then all but 2 flowers fell off. I’ve had no idea how to care for it but I have just learned so much from your video. I only kept it because of the 2 flowers left at the top of the tallest stem. Now suddenly 2 new very healthy stems have grown and flower buds are growing fast.
