In 1984, they released their debut album, 'Limping For A Generation', which took on issues such as the Cold War and the AIDS epidemic, unusually for a pop band. Their first hit was in 1986 with "Digging Your Scene" from their second album, 'Animal Magic'. The single peaked at number 14 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart listing and number 7 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. To the band's delight, the parent album also hit number 35 on the Billboard 200,
In January 1987, 'She Was Only A Grocer's Daughter' was released. The album's biggest hit, "It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way", reached the top 10 in the U.K., although it never charted in the U.S. The band called it quits in late 1990 as the musical scene shifted away from them. Lead singer Dr. Robert then went solo. The band reformed in 2007 and has sporadically toured.

Said what you never had, baby, you won't miss
There's a saying going round and it goes like this
Said what you never had, baby, you won't miss
And it's all in the name of competition
People crying out for more
There's a saying going round and it goes like this
This is your life and it's sad
Now it's time (time)
Time to grab a hold of your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
There's a saying going round and it goes like this
Said what you never had, people, you won't miss
There's a saying going round and it goes like this
Said what you never had, people, you won't miss
And inside when your freedom bites the dust
And your dreams have all gone bad
Said what you never had, people
This is your life and it's sad
Now it's time (time)
Time to grab a hold of your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is your life and it's sad
Now it's time (time)
Time to grab a hold of your life
Hey, yeah
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is, this is your life
This is your life
This is your life
This...
The lyrics of The Blow Monkeys's song "This is Your Life" speak to the idea of competition and the pressure to constantly pursue more, even at the cost of one's own happiness and contentment. The repeated refrain of "said what you never had, baby, you won't miss" highlights the danger of always striving for what is beyond one's reach and neglecting the beauty of the present moment.
The song also speaks to the feelings of disappointment and loss that can come when one's dreams don't come to fruition. The line "And inside when your freedom bites the dust, and your dreams have all gone bad" is a poignant reminder that sometimes life doesn't go as planned, and that it's important to find joy and fulfillment in the things that we do have.
The chorus of "This is your life and it's sad, now it's time to grab a hold of your life" is a call to action to seize control of one's own destiny and find contentment in the present moment. The song encourages listeners to appreciate what they do have, rather than constantly pining for what they don't.
