Flip Flop & Fly
The Blues Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I get the blues gonna give me a rockin' chair
When I get the blues gonna give me a rockin' chair
When the blues overtake, gonna rock rock away from here
When I get lonesome, I get right on the telephone

Call my baby, and tell her I'm gonna come back home
I say little darling, please have my dinner ready
Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die
Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die
Don't ever leave me
Don't ever say goodbye

Here comes by baby, flashing a new gold tooth
Here comes by baby, flashing a new gold tooth
If she shows more, she can rock home with the bacon too
I've got a Mississippi bullfrog sitting on a hollow stone
I've got a Mississippi bullfrog sitting on a hollow stone
I've got to work for this guy - I don't know which way to turn

Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die
Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die
Don't ever leave me
Don't ever say goodbye

Give me one last kiss and hold it a long long time
Give me one last kiss and hold it a long long time
I want to feel that kiss till my head run feels like wine
Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die
Flip, flop and fly
I don't care if I die

Don't ever leave me
Don't ever say goodbye

Overall Meaning

The Blues Brothers' "Flip, Flop & Fly" is a classic blues song about dealing with the blues and loneliness. In the first verse, the singer expresses his desire for a rocking chair to help him cope with the blues. He wants to rock away from his troubles and find some peace of mind. The second verse talks about how the singer copes with loneliness by calling his lover and asking her to have his dinner ready when he comes home. The chorus repeats the phrase "flip, flop, and fly," which seems to mean that the singer wants to lighten his mood and have some fun, even if it means taking risks.

In the third verse, the singer talks about his lover, who is flashing a new gold tooth. He seems to be impressed by her flashy ways and suggests she can "rock home with the bacon too" if she shows more. The fourth verse references a Mississippi bullfrog sitting on a hollow stone, which may be a metaphor for the singer feeling stuck and not knowing which way to turn. The chorus repeats once more, with the singer emphasizing that he doesn't want his lover to ever leave him.

Overall, the song is about coping with the blues and loneliness by finding joy in the little things in life and taking risks to have some fun. The singer wants to rock away his troubles and be with his lover, who he hopes will never leave him.

Elwood's harp is sounding like pure magic!!!!

@MrBostonrobb

One of the most influential blues albums from start to finish on the planet, from a drummer's perspective. Steve Jordan's a template...

@TheSamuraiGoomba

I see people complaining about the singing. To me, this singing is perfect for the blues. It's not always about how melodic you are. It's about feeling. Nobody sings the blues the way Belushi did.

@caribouwho

Jake and Elwood were fucking talented.

@davidhofmann2151

They did so much to reignite the genre. The band assembled was nice too. Not the strongest song for his vocals, but the energy is there in songs like She Caught The Katy. Bravo for filling up the briefcase and with Cab, Aretha, and Ray...cmon.

As a wise man once said:
'It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing'

@@JesusChrist-mh4irhaha I like that 👍

@ChiMessenger606

Are you being serious? I’m a huge Belushi fan but there’s no chance in hell that he was the best to ever sing the blues. Not even close 😂😂 He would be the first to admit it too. Have you even heard of Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters or Buddy Guy? Good lord dude!! 😂

The Blues was rooted all the way back to the cotton fields during slavery. Black people invented it like pretty much every other genre of music that existed. Know your history!
