Aykroyd and the band, occasionally joined by Belushi's brother Jim, make regular appearances at musical festivals worldwide.

They are legends because they are fantastically talented and they were the musicians on many hit songs by artists who are considered to be the greatest of all time. That band had a lot to do with how musical history was shaped.

Peeps in the States don't understand how, in the late 60's, the Blues and Soul was played on Canadian radio freely. It had a giant impact, where in the US many States refused to play any of it. I heard a story about the genesis of this act. Dan and John got to know each other, and were good friends. Both of them shared that they loved the blues. Then they both shared with each other that when they were kids, they wanted to grow up and be blues musicians. They both had the same dream! They were popular and cool on SNL, but they really wanted to be blues men. They decided to play blues men on SNL, but it didn't come out funny. They both had a passion for music, cared about doing it right, and just kept refining it and getting better. It took off from there.

@Seth Thomas I was speaking of “Western Music” as a marketing term within the music industry. Obviously, that type of music and its western/cowboy themes predates the marketing term but it just wasn’t called “Western Music” back in the 1800s so far as I know. When we think of the cowboy/western music of the 1800s we generally classify it as part of as part of the early American folk music scene. A lot of the 1800s cowboy music falls under the classification term traditional string music.

@Charles Bunnell I agree to a great extent but there was "Western" music that goes back to the late 1800's and Western music was very popular in those regions starting in the 1920's. In the 30's acts like Bob Wills and the Texas Playboy, Spade Cooley, Tex Ritter, Ernest Tub, The Sons of the Pioneers, Jimmy Rodgers and others really brought the music into the spotlight where it enjoyed a large fan base until the Mid 50's. I remember seeing this when it originally aired (I was 12 or 13 at the time), and being so impressed a guy built like Belushi could do such an effortless cartwheel. I remember exactly where I was when I heard on the radio he’d died. I was bringing my Mom out shopping. She never watched SNL, but knew him from ‘Animal House’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ movie. She wondered aloud what could have happened to someone so young, and I said right away, “I bet it was drugs” (having no idea at the time how out of control he was). Sadly, I was right.

Man the energy and fun as well as respect for the art is so infectious. Everybody is working so hard, everybody is at the top of their game, and even if there's a little flub they run with it and it's just a good time. Truly a lightning in a bottle moment.
