Classed as a Britpop band, given that their appearance and initial huge success with songs such as Slight Return coincided synchronously with the Britpop explosion, their debut record Expecting To Fly appeared in 1996.
As time has gone by, the band have actually become a more conventional 'indie' band - whilst notching up hits such as Marblehead Johnson, If... and Keep the Home Fires Burning they have struggled to replicate the success of their debut. After seven singles reaching the UK Top 20 in total, they are now well out of the public eye, but unlike almost all of the fellow 'Britpop' bands, they continue to release new material and tour.
Following two further albums on major, A&M/Universal (1998's Return to the Last Chance Saloon and 2000's Science & Nature), they signed to the big indie, Cooking Vinyl in 2003 for Luxembourg and 2006's The Bluetones.
Vocalist Mark Morriss released a solo EP under the alias Fi-Lo Beddow in 2006, which eventually bloomed into a full solo record under his real name. Memory Muscle was released in June 2008, and received a surprising amount of critical acclaim, given the music press' frosty attitude to Bluetones material. It included new versions of the songs which made up the Fi-Lo Beddow EP, and featured strings arrnaged by film score composer David Arnold.
The band released their final album, A New Athens, in 2010, and completed their farewell tour in September 2011.
It was announced on 13 April 2015 that the band was reforming for a tour and have subsequently toured on further occasions, including a headline slot on the 2017 Star Shaped Festival tour.
4-Day Weekend

and i know you'll be leaving one day
i cant promise that i'll ever be the one
but if you love me til monday
lets seran wrap for the weekend
and see who comes up for air first
we can go and break some windows
forget we ever said the word
the future is dead
that's what you said
its all in your head you see
not mine
i am fine
i'm alive
i've arrived
we thought we could make a difference
be remembered when the pyramids are dust
but we've had to learn that these bridges that we build
can be as fragile as a loved one's trust
the future is dead
that's what you said
its all in your head you see
not mine
i am fine
i'm alive
i've arrived
here comes my everything
this is my everything
there goes my everything
bye bye love
the future is dead
that's what you said
its all in your head you see
not mine
i am fine
i'm alive
i've arrived
the future is dead
that's what you said
its all in your head you see
not mine
i am fine
i'm alive
i've arrived
lets forget about the question
we've been dragging 'round for years
clear the smokey air between us
then say goodbye
and shed no tears
The Bluetones' song 4-Day Weekend is a song about rejecting tradition, living in the moment, and the acceptance of impermanence. The singer of the song is seeking an intense and passionate temporary relationship, without the expectation of a long-term commitment. The lyrics, "I don't care much for tradition, and I know you'll be leaving one day. I can't promise that I'll ever be the one, but if you love me til Monday" set the tone for the rest of the song, focusing on the temporary nature of the relationship. The line "let's seran wrap for the weekend, and see who comes up for air first" is an evocative image representing the idea of being so consumed in a moment that everything else disappears, and the singer and their lover are wrapped up in each other. The line "forget we ever said the word" suggests that the pair wants to avoid any talk or possibility of a future, preferring to live in the moment and not spoil things with the weight of expectation.
The song also speaks to the challenges of youth and trying to make a difference. The lines "we thought we could make a difference, be remembered when the pyramids are dust" highlights the naivete of youth and the idea that they could change the world. However, the harsh reality sets in, and "we've had to learn that these bridges that we build can be as fragile as a loved one's trust." The song is exploring the painful realization that comes with growing up and recognizing the fragility of everything around us, including relationships.
Overall, The Bluetones' 4-Day Weekend is a song that celebrates the fleeting time we have, encourages being present in the moment, and accepting the impermanence of life.
