Out Of Nowhere
The Boilermaker Jazz Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyone knows him as Old Folks
Like the seasons, he'll come and he'll go
Just as free as a bird and as good as his word
That's why everybody loves him so

Always leaving his spoon in his coffee
Tucks his napkin up under his chin
And that yellow cow-pie is so mellow it's ripe
But you needn't be ashamed of him
Every Friday he'll go fishing, down on his favorite lake
But he only hooks a perch or two, the whale got away
Looks like we warm the steak

Someday there'll be no more Old Folks
What a lonesome old town this will be

Children's voice at play, will be still for a day
The day they take the Old Folks away

Overall Meaning

The Boilermaker Jazz Band's "Out of Nowhere" is a song that captures the essence of a beloved elderly man who is affectionately called Old Folks. This man, who is like the seasons, comes and goes freely, and everybody loves him because he is as good as his word and he lives without any restrictions. The first stanza of the song describes Old Folks' idiosyncrasies. He leaves his spoon in his coffee and tucks his napkin under his chin. The song observes that even though his habits might be quirky, he is still lovable, and his behavior should not be judged.

In the second stanza of the song, Old Folks' love for fishing is highlighted. He goes fishing every Friday on his favorite lake, and although he only catches a few fish, he still looks forward to the catch of the day. Everyone loves Old Folks because of his carefree nature, and they know that every time he comes around, there is never a dull moment. The final stanza of the song has a somber tone. The song speculates about a time when "there'll be no more Old Folks," and the town will be desolate. The song paints a visual picture of how children's voices at play will be silenced for a day when they take the Old Folks away.
