The band's only appearance on the UK Singles Charts was "I'm the Urban Spaceman", which reached #5 in October 1968. The single was produced by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym "Apollo C. Vermouth". The band disbanded in 1970. The band reunited briefly in 1972 and again in 1988, before reuniting permanently in 2002.
After the initial split, Innes provided songs for "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and the Monty Python troupe's subsequent films, and is often considered to be an "unofficial member" of the troupe. Stanshall died in a house fire in 1995.
The band's six albums are: "Gorilla" (1967), "The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse" (1968, released as "Urban Spaceman" in the US), "Tadpoles" (1969), "Keynsham" (1969), "Let's Make Up and Be Friendly" (1972) and "Pour l'Amour des Chiens" (2007).
Monster Mash

(Who knows?)
I was working in the lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld a eerie sight
For my monster from the slab began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise he did the mash
To the master bedroom where the vampires feast
The ghouls all came from their humble abode
To get a jolt from my electrodes, they did the mash
The Zombies were having fun, the party had just begun
The guests included Wolf man, Dracula and his son
The scene was rocking, all were digging sounds
Igor on chains, backed by his babe hounds
The coffin baggers were about to arrive
With their vocal group, 'The Crypt Kicker Five'
They played the mash
Out from his coffin, Drac's voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He opened the lid and shook his fist and said
"What ever happened to the Transylvania Twist?"
It's now the mash
Now every thing's cool, Drac's a part of the band
And my Monster Mash is the hit of the land
For the living, this mash was meant too
When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you
Then you can mash
The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s Monster Mash is a song about a mad scientist who creates a monster. While the scientist is at his lab one late night, his monster suddenly rises from its slab and begins to dance to a tune called “The Mash”. Soon after, other monsters like Dracula and the Wolf man come to join the party, along with guests like grave diggers and police. The party gets lively with everyone dancing to the tune of “The Mash”. At one point, Dracula complains about the Transylvanian Twist being out of style and suggests that they all switch to “The Mash”. Eventually, everyone is grooving the night away and the scientist’s Monster Mash becomes a hit. The final verse suggests that anyone who wants to join in the fun at the scientist’s lab should mention ‘Boris’ at the door.
The lyrics of Monster Mash are playful and describe a wild and fun monster party. The song uses a metaphor for the process of a scientist creating a monster and making it come to life. The dance ‘The Mash’ reflects the creation of the monster and how it comes to life. It is said that the song also plays with the idea of a cultural change, as Dracula suggests that the Transylvanian Twist is no longer in style and the Mash is the new dance craze. Overall, the song has themes of innovation, experimentation, and adaptation. It encourages the listener to join in with the monster party and dance the night away.
