High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,
above the blue and windy sea.
your golden sun will shine for me!
I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,
above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
your golden sun will shine for me!
The lyrics to The Bonzo Dog Band's "In San Francisco" are a nostalgic reflection of the love and longing felt for the iconic city by the bay. The song begins with a declaration, "I left my heart in San Francisco," as the singer reminisces about the city's breathtaking beauty. The reference to the city's hills and cable cars highlights the unique topography of San Francisco and its famous transportation system, while the line "climb halfway to the stars" speaks to the city's lofty reputation as a place of possibility and dreams.
The second verse of the song reinforces the idea of a love left behind in San Francisco, as the singer describes the cold morning fog that permeates the city. Despite the discomfort, the singer remains steadfast in their devotion to the city, and their love who waits "above the blue and windy sea." The final line of the song "when I come home to you, San Francisco, your golden sun will shine for me!" encapsulates the feeling of joy and warmth that comes from returning to a beloved place.
Overall, "In San Francisco" is a tribute to the enduring power of love and the allure of this iconic city that has captured the hearts of so many.
