From New Orleans, they were classically trained and switched over to jazz as they grew up along with the form. First recorded in 1925, they went on to play vaudeville and ended up on radio in California. After being heard coast to coast on one of the first nationwide radio hookups, they became stars of radio in NYC headlining both their own programs, as well as working on shows with Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers until the trio disbanded in 1936, mainly due to their marriages. They also appeared in many films of the time. (See youtube)
Connie Boswell, who later changed the spelling of her name to Connee, continued as a solo singer after the demise of the group, influencing singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She did all this despite being unable to walk alone due to childhood polio and other back injuries.
"There is only one person I ever tried to sing like and that person was Connee Boswell."
Ella Fitzgerald, NBC News interview
"Connee Boswell is, without a doubt, the most widely imitated singer of all time."
Frank Sinatra

Everybody Loves My Baby
The Boswell Sisters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
feeling good and everything
just like a bird in the spring
it's my sweety can't you guess
while the pining i confess
does he love me that's why i shout
Everybody loves my baby
nobody but me
now
everybody wants my baby
but my baby don't want nobody but me
that's plain to see!
The Boswell Sisters' song "Everybody Loves My Baby" is a light-hearted, upbeat tune that expresses the singer's happiness and love for her partner. The lyrics are full of energy and positivity, with the singer proclaiming that she feels like a king and a bird in spring because of her sweetheart. However, there is also an underlying sense of anxiety and insecurity in the lyrics, as the singer confesses to pining for her partner and questioning whether he truly loves her.
The chorus of the song, "Everybody loves my baby, but my baby don't love nobody but me / Nobody but me / Now everybody wants my baby, but my baby don't want nobody but me / That's plain to see!" emphasizes the singer's possessiveness and pride in her partner's love for her. She revels in the attention that her partner receives from others, but ultimately believes that he only has eyes for her. This sentiment is reinforced in the repetition of the phrase "nobody but me", which highlights the exclusivity of the singer's relationship.
Overall, "Everybody Loves My Baby" is a playful and entertaining song that captures the joy and uncertainty of young love. The mix of upbeat music and lyrics that express both confidence and insecurity make it a relatable and timeless classic.

They were the absolute best tight harmony sister group ever. Being from New Orleans was a big reason. They picked up all the jazz and blues influences and played instruments as well. They knew music and rhythms from an orchestral aspect and transferred it vocally....and brilliantly!

Brilliantly rhythmical and witty. An historical track to be treasured.

From Bozzies:"Vocal gymnastics” is a term that has been used to describe the way Martha, Connie and Vet put a song together. Nowhere is this more jaw-droppingly evident than in the amazing recording of Everybody Loves My Baby. It starts out energetically to a nice fast swing clip and soon Connie is scatting through the verse. Then, out of the blue, the Sisters double-time the chorus in gibberish. The velocity of the staccato notes, the clarity of diction and the perfection of the pitch is mind boggling. But there’s more — Connie “gulls” through the bridge and the chorus repeats again. The band comes back in at a much slower speed and a delayed cymbal crash seems to say “whoa, what just happened here?” When the sisters come back in they pick up the tempo and throw out the melody. Heck, why not throw out the words! They do and scat along in perfect three part harmony interspersed with the song title when it’s convenient. It is a perfect 10!"
