Bullying the Jukebox
The Bouncing Souls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I walked into the bar and I put in twenty bucks
Because I know people's taste in music sucks
About four hours had passed,
forty picks and my empty glass,
a tasty number all dressed in black tried to rock us
with her wack attack
There was no fuss we knew her game
you look good but all your songs are lame

Bullying the jukebox because it's fun,
you can't get near it until we're done
Bullying the jukebox because we rule
all the songs we like are really cool

Songs of punk and songs of joy,
love songs about girls and boys;
songs of metal and English stuff and some hardcore
songs to make us feel tough
but we all agreed that the songs of woe,
and the songs of loved ones had to go
Churned up memories of time we dreamt that got us all
verklempt
We drank until our last song

We paid our tab and we said so long swerwing in and out of cars...
it's off to rock another bar

Overall Meaning

The Bouncing Souls's song Bullying the Jukebox is all about taking control of the music in a bar or a club and deliberately forcing your own taste in music on everyone present. The singer walks into a bar and puts twenty dollars into the jukebox because he knows that the other people's taste in music sucks. He spends four hours playing forty songs and drinking from his empty glass. Then a lady dressed in black comes wearing who tries to impress everyone with her bad music taste. But the singer and others are not fooled by her and reject her choice of songs. They try to take control of the jukebox by bullying it, essentially locking others out until they are done. They only play songs that they like, songs of punk, love songs about girls and boys, and songs to make them feel tough.

The lyrics of the song advocate the idea of taking control by force and showing people what great music is all about. It is the band's way of encouraging people to value good music and making sure that those who have no taste or who are too lazy to make an effort, are forced to listen to something better. By bullying the jukebox, people can create a better atmosphere and enjoy their time without having to listen to bad music.
