Step Out
The Boxer Rebellion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Step out of the car
Inner-city action
It's already won
It's already won

Charges bring a swarm
To rumors of corruption
It's already war
It's already war

And I'm looking for you
So surrender to me
In this storm
It's hard to see
There's a thin
line between
Love and hate
Love and hate

Step out of the car
Acts of desperation
Leave you in a mess
Leave you in a mess

Americana's glow
Is gone without a place to go
It's already war
It's already war

And I'm looking for you
So surrender to me
In this storm
It's hard to see
There's a thin
line between
Love and hate
Love and hate

Voices winning me instead
Undercover in my head
Voices winning me instead
Triggers pointed at my head

Step out of the car
Step out of the car

Step out of the car
Step out of the car

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Boxer Rebellion's song Step Out Of The Car describe a chaotic scene in an urban setting. The first verse sets the scene of a situation that has already been won, but charges of corruption have caused a swarm of people to gather. The second verse takes on a more intense tone, as it speaks of an ongoing war - both literally and metaphorically. The singer's search for someone in the midst of all of this chaos adds to the confusion and danger of the situation. In the chorus, the singer refers to the thin line between love and hate which, in this scenario, could reference any number of relationships or motivations behind the violence playing out in the song.

The second verse's reference to "Americana's glow" implies that this violence is taking place in the United States, but the song doesn't give any specifics about the location of the events. "Step Out Of The Car" could serve as a warning to those who choose to involve themselves in situations where they may become collateral damage. The repeated refrain of "Step out of the car" could be the singer's plea for someone to stop and avoid the situation altogether.

Overall, the song is very open to interpretation, but the imagery and language used in the lyrics suggest a high-stakes scenario with dangers that go beyond physical harm. It's a song about being sucked into something much larger than oneself without clear motivations or goals.

Very nice work here, so relaxing and chilled, yet with just the right amount of energetic moments. Great song.

OK I realised this morning driving to work why I love this song so much - its not just that its an awesome song but it reminds me of my dad years ago, as he had an electric guitar he used to play :) The gorgeous guitar sound at the start of this track takes me back to being a kid and hearing dad play, or letting us play it, the smell of the wires and that lose string deep sound :) Love when music brings back memories or even smells etc. So good!!!

Heard some great music playing in the record store and asked "Who are these guys?" Best 17 euro's I ever spent. I play it on and on in heavy 0031 traffic with a smile on my face. The power in this particular song is amazing.

Tony Sproule

One of the greatest bands to come on the scene in a long time! Everything they touch is gold!
