Don't Think Twice It's All Right
The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Even you don't know by now
And it ain′t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window, and I'll be gone
You′re the reason I′m a-traveling on
And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
The light I never knowed
And it ain′t no use in turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
But I wish there was somethin′ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
But we never did too much talking anyway
But don't think twice, it's all right.
So it ain′t no use in calling out my name, gal
Like you never done before
And it ain′t no use in calling out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I′m a-thinking and a-wonderin' walking down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I am told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don′t think twice, it's all right.
So long honey, baby
Where I′m bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I′ll just say fare thee well
I ain′t a-saying you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don′t think twice, it's all right.
The singer of this song is leaving his lover and is expressing that there is no use pondering why. He tells her it is not worth it and that he will never know why he feels compelled to leave her. He lets her know that he will be gone, even though she is the reason for his travels. He suggests for them to not think twice about this, as it is all right.
The singer then muses that his lover turning on the light would be pointless as he is on the dark side of the road. He then expresses a desire that there was something she could say or do to make him think twice about leaving her, but they never talk much anyway. Even with the lack of communication, he wants her to know that it is still alright.
The singer provides a final statement that it is no use for his lover to call his name because he will not hear it. He is thinking about their past as he is walking down the road, reminiscing about loving a woman who wanted to take more than his heart, but instead wanted his soul. He gives his final farewell, saying “goodbye” is too explicit for what a goodbye means, so he says “fare thee well.” He acknowledges that she was never unkind, but she could have been better, and he was only given a finite amount of time on this earth that was somewhat wasted by her. Nevertheless, he wants her to know that it is still all right.

Same, honey. That could have been Union Station. Found this movie and music from an Alison Krauss and US rabbit trail. So glad I did. WOW.

Just fine, the lady and her singing and the whole band's playing: "Don't think twice, it's alright". She is an eye and an ear catcher. Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.)
