The BB & Q Band was a studio concept created in 1981 by the businessman, Jacques Fred Petrus. After the success with Change in 1980, and also with Macho and the Peter Jacques band in the late 1970s Petrus and his close co-worker, Italian Mauro Malavasi decided to launch a new project, named after the three boroughs in New York that the band "members" came from.

Won't you say that you are free
Take you out to somewhere really special
Oh won't you come along with me
From what I've heard them say
The music that they play
Is nothin' like you've ever heard before
Once you get to dancin' you can stomp your feet
What do you say now?
Are you ready or not
It's only up the street
Everybody's dancin'
And everybody's on the beat
I'm a beggin' you now
It's where we both could be
Everybody's dancin'
And everybody's on the beat
Are you ready or not
It's only up the street
Everybody's dancin'
And everybody's on the beat
I'm a beggin' you now
It's where we both could be
Everybody's dancin'
And everybody's on the beat
Are you ready or not
It's only up the street
Everybody's dancin'
And everybody's on the beat
Say that you'll except this invitation
Oh won't you say you'll come along
Music can give lovers inspiration
It's just a place where we could go
Ain't nobody's got a care
'cause there's music in the air
It's nothin' like you've ever seen before
People dancin' all night long
Won't you say you've got the time
You wanna go there?
The lyrics of "On The Beat" by The Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens Band speak of an invitation to someone to join in on a fun and lively night out. The singer is asking the addressee if they’d like to go out to a “somewhere really special” where the music they play is “nothing like you’ve ever heard before”. The singer is looking for company and wants to show the addressee a good time. The music is described as having a rhythm that will keep the addressee dancing and stomping their feet all night. The singer pleads with the addressee to accept their invitation and join them in this place where there is “music in the air” and “people dancing all night long”.
The compelling message of this song is about the joy and release that can come from losing oneself to music and dance. The lyrics are rich in sensory detail and paint a vivid picture of a lively atmosphere where people are uninhibited and free, surrendering to the music’s groovy beat. Ultimately, the singer is asking the addressee to join them in this joyous atmosphere, where they can experience all the energy and abandon that comes from the music of this particular place.

Great jam takes me way way back to good times in NYC in ‘81 as teenager. When I heard this jam on 98.7 Kiss FM, WBLS, on the JVC, Sanyo or Panasonic boom boxes playing this jam at the handball courts and house parties 🎉. Didn’t know this band was from NYC
