Unchained Melody
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time,
Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?

I need your love,
I need your love,
God speed your love, to me.

Lonely rivers sigh,
Wait for me, wait for me
I'll be coming home, wait for me!

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time,
Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?

I need your love,

I need your love,
God speed your love, to me...

Overall Meaning

The above lyrics are from the iconic song 'Unchained Melody' by The Browns. It's a heart-wrenching love song that portrays the yearning for a loved one. The opening lines 'Oh, my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time' set the tone for the whole song. The singer expresses their deep feelings for their beloved who they have been missing for a long time. The phrase 'time goes by so slowly and time can do so much' highlights the fact that they have been waiting for a very long time for their loved one's return. They have been longing so badly for their touch that they can't control their emotions anymore. The repetition of the line 'Are you still mine?' emphasizes the uncertainty and the fear of losing their loved one forever.

In the second stanza, the singer makes an earnest request to their loved one to shower them with love. 'I need your love, I need your love, Godspeed your love, to me' portrays their desperation and their desire to be loved. The third stanza 'Lonely rivers sigh, wait for me, wait for me, I'll be coming home, wait for me!' creates an image of a person yearning for their lover, adrift on a lonely river, and calling out to them. The last stanza is a repetition of the first with added intensity, highlighting the passion and the undying love of the singer.

Just a bit of trivia, the Browns sister Norma sings on his track as well. Maxine who was pregnant at the time couldn't reach the high notes, so Norma stepped in to do those parts for her. Other songs she sings with the trio are, 'True love Goes Far Beyond', and 'Man In The Moon'.
